About the role

If you’re passionate about being part of a dynamic organization that enables a Fortune 100 company with nearly $70 billion in annual sales to drive innovation and adopt new technologies that deliver business results, then Nationwide’s Technology team could be the place for you! At Nationwide®, “on your side” goes beyond just words. Our customers are at the center of everything we do and we’re looking for associates who are passionate about delivering extraordinary care.

If you are passionate about turning complex data into meaningful, consumable, and well-governed information that supports decision making, then we have a great opportunity for you.

As a member of the Enterprise Data Office, the Data Designer works closely with business stakeholders, Dev Line partners, Data Architects, platform owners, and other internal teams to identify analytical needs, evaluate source data, and design the data structures, mappings, and visualizations needed to support business outcomes.

This position combines hands-on data analysis, profiling, and modeling with a strong understanding of business processes and the desired capabilities of the teams we support. It includes mapping data flows and technical interfaces, documenting source-to-target mappings, defining conceptual, logical, and physical data models, and providing insights and recommendations that improve data quality, usability, and readiness for consumption. The role also requires partnership across technology and business teams to ensure new and evolving solutions aligned to governance, security, and transformation standards.

A successful candidate should possess the following skills and/or experience:

  • Collaboration Effectiveness – demonstrated skill working directly with stakeholders, business partners, SMEs, systems peers, and cross-functional teams to elicit data requirements and design appropriate data models that align with business needs.
  • Translating current and future business requirements into conceptual, logical, and physical data model designs.  Proficiency in utilizing standard data modeling tools (e.g. Erwin, ER Studio, Toad DM, PowerDesigner, etc.).
  • Structured execution of data analysis, data profiling, and data mapping tasks.
  • Ensures referential integrity is maintained via data modeling design and data quality recommendations.
  • Ensures data governance practices are followed during model creation to support efforts such as data cataloging, taxonomy, data lineage, and data quality.
  • Designing data models for multiple distinct patterns (e.g. relational, dimensional, hybrid) associated with data warehouse, BI, and large data applications.
  • Creation of net new data models and extension of existing across multiple DBMS platforms (e.g. Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Snowflake, Teradata, NoSQL, Neo4j).
  • Ability to understand and explain complex data integration and extraction / transformation / load processes.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and resolving data model performance issues to optimize database performance and enhance overall system functionality.
  • Documenting and communicating data model designs and standards to ensure understanding and compliance with expectations for interoperability across the organization.
  • Fluency in Python, SQL, and Unix.  High proficiency with generating complex SQL queries is required.
  • Version control of databases and metadata management tools (e.g. Git, Liquibase, etc).
  • Proven communication skills illustrating ability to effectively interact with people at all levels of business and technology organizations.
  • Experience working in an Agile environment using Lean, Kanban and Scrum practices.
  • Insurance and Financial domain experience is highly desired.

It is our intention to fill this role in Columbus, Ohio on a hybrid schedule. However, on occasion, applications from internal candidates working remotely who bring critical industry skills and relevant experience may be considered.

This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization.  Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program.
