The Opportunity
Roswell Park is seeking a visionary and collaborative physician leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine.
This department plays a vital and distinct role within the institution. Complementing the Department of Medicine—which houses medical oncology subspecialties—the Department of Internal Medicine brings together general internists and key subspecialists to deliver comprehensive, high-acuity care for patients with complex oncologic needs.
Core areas of expertise include:
• Cardiology
• Pulmonary Medicine
• Nephrology
• Gastroenterology
• Endocrinology
• Infectious Diseases
This is a department at the intersection of complex medicine and cancer care, where clinical excellence directly enables cutting-edge oncology treatment and research.
The Role
The Chair will lead the continued evolution of the Department of Internal Medicine as a national model for integrated, cancer-focused subspecialty care.
This leader will:
• Shape Clinical Strategy & Growth
Expand access, strengthen subspecialty programs, and drive patient volume through innovation, efficiency, and strategic partnerships.
• Advance Quality & Outcomes
Champion evidence-based care and elevate quality metrics in alignment with Roswell Park’s commitment to high-reliability, patient-centered care.
• Elevate Academic & Research Integration
Foster collaboration across departments, supporting faculty as clinical experts, co-investigators, and contributors to translational and clinical research.
• Build and Inspire Teams
Recruit, develop, and mentor exceptional faculty, with a strong emphasis on supporting early-career physicians and cultivating future leaders.
• Strengthen National Reputation
Position the department—and its subspecialties—for greater national visibility and academic impact.
The Chair will report directly to the Physician-in-Chief and serve as a key member of the institution’s clinical leadership team.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be a respected physician leader who brings both clinical credibility and strategic vision.
Qualifications include:
• Board certification in Internal Medicine (or relevant subspecialty)
• Eligibility for appointment at the rank of Professor
• Demonstrated success in academic leadership, including faculty development and mentorship
• A track record of clinical excellence in complex or cancer-adjacent care
• Experience advancing quality, safety, and operational performance
• Strong alignment with multidisciplinary, team-based care models
Preferred qualifications:
• Experience in oncology-focused environments or care of medically complex cancer patients
• A record of peer-reviewed, funded research or meaningful scholarly contribution
• Demonstrated ability to lead within a matrixed academic medical center
