This position has overall accountability for the US Casualty Claims Organization and oversight over the Bermuda Casualty Claims Team. This position reports to the Chief Claims Officer (CCO) and is accountable for ensuring Claims organizational capabilities are delivered in alignment with divisional strategic shared vision and priorities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring delivery excellence of the Claims Management Journey (from intake to payout) for the US Casualty Claims department
  • Actively participate as a member of the Claims Steering Committee, partnering with the leadership team to drive the planning and delivery of Claims divisional strategy
  • Bring a senior level strategic view to the delivery of products, tools, controls, and business processes aligned to divisional strategic shared priorities
  • Deliver business value working in partnership with multiple cross-divisional delivery teams and business leaders to ensure organizational capabilities are delivered in alignment with defined priorities
  • Identify cross-divisional dependencies and impediments to achieving outcomes
  • Active partnership with internal stakeholders (Senior Claims Leadership, Underwriting, PL, Actuarial) on claims, litigation developments, coverage trends, reserve movements and loss mitigation efforts, with ability to address both micro and macro developments.
  • Promote and enhance strong relationships with customers and channel partners
  • Assess direct reports’ performance, providing management and career development
  • Analyze and provide guidance on resolution of high exposure claims
  • Review and approve reserves and settlements, as appropriate
  • Ensure that team adheres to compliance standards, including Fair Claims Practices regulations
  • Travel to other Markel offices and conferences, as required

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • JD, advanced degree , or focused technical degree a plus.

Certification

  • CPCU or other industry designations a plus
  • Work Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of insurance and/or litigation experience
  • 3+ leadership years of claims leadership preferred

Skill Sets

  • High-level understanding of P&C and Specialty (re)insurance classes and a strong understanding of product lines being directed
  • Ability to manage teams of seasoned managers and examiners responsible for handling a variety of claims
  • High attention to detail and proven ability to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Proven ability to develop strong working relationships and establish a high level of credibility across functional and lines of business
  • Demonstrates strong decision-making skills and problem solving techniques
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in a fast paced, high volume, and rapidly changing environment
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining strong business relationships
  • Strong desire for continuous improvement
