Middlebury’s Office of Digital Learning & Inquiry (DLINQ) partners with the community to explore and design digital practices and spaces that advance Middlebury’s educational mission. The QA projects intern will play a key role in supporting the development of hybrid and fully online courses and programs, particularly by ensuring the accuracy and accessibility of instructional materials developed for courses by performing quality assurance processes on course-related media (audio and video). DLINQ has partnered with multiple departments at the Middlebury Institute to transform programs for online delivery, and we expect the volume of course development work to increase. Quality assurance is a key component of the work of creating inclusive and accessible online learning.
Requirements
Under the supervision of DLINQ's Director of Exploratory Initiatives & Partnerships, the primary responsibility of QA interns is to conduct a careful and thorough review of captions and transcripts of spoken language (primarily English*) for media (primarily video) that are created as part of the online course development process.
* Occasionally, we have special projects that require specific language combinations like Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. Candidates with high level proficiency in multiple languages encouraged to apply.
QA intern tasks typically involve:
- Running accessibility and broken link checkers in Canvas LMS
- Preparing media assets for captioning with automatic speech recognition tools
- Reviewing videos to identify errors in captions and transcripts
- Correcting errors in captions and transcripts
- Archiving completed caption and transcript files
- Embedding videos and transcripts in a Canvas LMS course site
- Tracking and reporting project progress to meet deadlines
In addition to completing multimedia QA assignments for online courses, QA interns contribute to style guide and technical documentation. QA interns may also be tasked with reviewing course content, user experience, and accessibility with guidance from instructional designers.
Knowledge, abilities, skills and prior experience
- Comfort with correcting mistakes in spoken and written English language
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to work independently, communicate progress, and meet stated deadlines
- Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time
- Basic computer skills (navigating the web, navigating file and folder structures, using multiple applications, using spreadsheets).
- Familiarity with Middlebury's instructional tools including Panopto video management, the Canvas learning management system, and Google cloud tools is a plus, but we will train with these skills as needed.
- Basic level of comfort reviewing and editing HTML in web content and working with web design tools
- Good communication, project, and time management skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Typical Schedule & Pay
This position has a flexible schedule and location. Pay is based on the 2025 student wage scale at the Level B “Skilled” grade with a starting hourly rate of $17.00. Although project work volume may change from week to week, we are looking for an intern to work 5-10 hours per week during the remainder of the academic year, with flexible hours set in agreement between the intern and supervisor. More availability for project work in summer hours and continuation into Fall. This position can be completed on campus or remotely with access to computers and software needed for the position at the Digital Learning Commons on campus at the Middlebury Institute. Interns will be expected to attend regular team check-in meeting with their supervisor.
