Trainee Railway Project Team

ERTMS is the international standard for train safety. At the moment ERTMS is already in use on a few railroad tracks in the Netherlands. Work is underway to expand the number of tracks in the coming years. ERTMS is a critical system in the security of train traffic and hence, the availability of the system is of great importance. The mobile connectivity (GSM-R/FRMCS) is an important link in the ERTMS chain and is responsible for train-wall communication. While the current mobile connectivity is provided by GSM-Railway, standardization is in progress for future railway communication based on 5G.  

Reliability of the ERTMS system is important to keep trains running safely. This reliability is impacted by the many components within the chain, such as the train driver and dispatcher, the driver-machine-interface, the mobile connectivity, the rail infrastructure.

Nokia provides operational and managed services for ProRail’s GSM-Railway (GSM-R) voice and data communications network in the Netherlands. 

This internship is aimed at conducting research into system failure of the ERTMS system, with a focus on the subsystem of mobile connectivity. The study will involve establishing a theoretical model of the system. Based on the model strengths and weaknesses can be analyzed and further studied. The aim is to make recommendations for improving the ERTMS system in its current setup but also for the future.

These recommendations can assist in improving the reliability of the railway transport system, based on ERTMS.

Duration: flexible, to be agreed (typically 6 months), starting time flexible
                 This internship can be part of a Master’s thesis.

Location: a combination of remote work and Hoofddorp office (the Netherlands) 

You will be entitled to an internship allowance of € 749 per month (based on 40 hours per week) which applies for MBO, HBO and WO students.
