We are seeking a talented individual to join our Government Human Service Consultant (GHSC) team at Mercer. This role can be based in Phoenix or Minneapolis, and it is a hybrid role with a requirement of working at least three days a week in the office.

Medicaid is a government-sponsored health insurance program in the United States designed to provide healthcare coverage to low-income individuals and families. As a consulting firm specializing in Medicaid, Mercer’s GHSC team assists state governments in optimizing their Medicaid programs. Our team plays a vital role in managing and analyzing Medicaid claims data to enhance patient access to care, improve cost efficiency, and elevate the quality of services provided to these individuals.

As a Government Health Senior Actuarial Analyst, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced programmers, actuaries, and clinicians, contributing to meaningful projects that aim to positively impact the lives of individuals and families in need. Join us in making a difference! 

We will count on you to:

• Utilize technical expertise in Microsoft Excel and SAS/SQL to support capitation rate setting and other actuarial projects
• Under the direction of the actuarial team, incorporate rate setting data and assumptions into actuarial models and inform the project teams on the impact of data and assumptions
• Participate in the drafting of project communications, including rate certification letters, presentations and other client communications
• Support project teams in finalizing capitation rates while learning the implications of Medicaid policies on data and rates
• Collaborate with a group of colleagues on smaller team-based assignments, with opportunities to participate in larger scale client and industry projects
• Work in a fast-paced, challenging and dynamic consulting environment with colleagues across all organizational levels to meet and exceed client demands and deadlines

What you need to have: 

• BA/BS degree
• A commitment to achieving a Society of Actuaries (SOA) designation, as demonstrated by having passed at least one SOA
• 1+ years minimum actuarial experience, with Medicaid or healthcare actuarial experience strongly preferred
• Proficiency with MS Excel, SAS/SQL or similar programs

• Medicaid actuarial experience (any state program, health insurer or Federal agency) or actuarial consulting experience
• Excellent interpersonal skills; strong oral and written communication skills
• Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks in a demanding work environment
• Strong critical thinking and analytical problem-solving skills
• Experience related to health plan analysis or capitated rate development is preferred, but not required
