JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Global has an opening for the Assistant Director of International Faculty Advising (IFA) in International Student & Scholar Advising (ISSA)  The ISSA unit is responsible for overseeing the immigration compliance advisement and support for roughly 10,000 international students, scholars, and faculty across the University.

This is a management position that leads the unit’s advocacy and support for the recruitment and retention of outstanding employees at Penn State. Penn State Global’s International Faculty Advising team consists of 4-6 full-time advisers, administrative support, and this position to facilitate employment-based sponsorship for global faculty and researchers in support of the university’s teaching, research, and service mission.

The Assistant Director administers Penn State’s immigration sponsorship of international faculty and supervises the International Faculty Advising unit, including leadership on employment-based immigration matters and visa regulations involving E-3, H-1B, O-1, TN, as well as employment-based permanent residency casework for EB-2 Special Handling PERM, and EB-1 Outstanding Professors/Researchers. The Assistant Director also advises academic units, international faculty, and University stakeholders, prepares and files immigration cases, and ensures immigration compliance. This position:

  • Leads a team of 4-6 professionals and one administrative support. Manages recruitment, hiring, supervision, mentoring, and evaluation of IFA staff.  

  • Trains, supports and nurtures the professional development and success of advising staff.

  • Ensures effective and efficient day-to-day operations of advisement services in the unit. 

  • Provides leadership for employment-based immigration advising of international employees and hiring academic departments and case processing involving E-3, H-1B, O-1, TN, as well as employment-based permanent residency casework for EB-2 Special Handling PERM, and EB-1 Outstanding Professors/Researchers.

  • Communicates with federal agencies regarding individual petitions. The Assistant Director also prepares and files immigration cases, and manages own caseload. 

  • Advises on complex immigration regulations and policies, procedures, and best practices.

  • Serves as a resource to administrators, deans, department heads, faculty and HR to facilitate the hiring and retention of international faculty and researchers. Works with Human Resources and academic units on offers of employment
