Associate or Senior Editor (Electronic Engineering/Applied Physics), Nature

Location: New York or Berlin

Closing date: 27th April 2024

Nature, the international weekly journal of science, seeks to appoint an Associate/Senior Editor to cover the broad scientific field of electronic engineering.

Do you love science but feel that a research career isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more about the natural and technological world? Do you enjoy reading paper and keeping up to date with developments outside your chosen area of research? If the answer is ‘yes’, you could be the person we’re looking for to join the editorial team of Nature.

Nature, the international weekly journal of science, seeks to appoint an editor that will further our aim to publish the world’s best original research in broad field of electronic engineering, from exploratory work on the electronic properties of new candidate material systems (e.g. 2D materials) and the development of novel device architectures, through to fabrication and system-level integration of state-of-the-art electronic and spintronic devices. The ideal candidate will have a strong research background in any disciplines within this broad field, awareness of the current technological landscape, a critical eye and a keen interest in the field and its development more broadly.

The successful candidate will play a key role in determining the representation of applied physics and electronic engineering in our pages through the selection of manuscripts for publication and by interacting with the relevant research communities. This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position and calls for a keen interest in the practice and communication of science and technology.

To be considered for the position, you will have:

Research experience to PhD level (or equivalent) in a relevant research discipline — ideally with a strong background in the physics and engineering of electronic devices, but highly qualified candidates from other areas of physics with a good understanding of applied research should not be deterred from applying.

A passion for science and a thirst to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research and technological developments, both within and beyond your speciality. (Note that extensive editorial training is offered to help new editors become comfortable with handling a broad field of research.)

The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.

Excellent time-management skills in order to efficiently navigate multiple time-sensitive activities and shifting priorities.

Be eager to interact with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be fluent in English (written and spoken).

The successful candidate will report to the relevant Team Manager, but also work closely with editorial colleagues from across the Nature teams - they will be expected to play an important role in influencing the representation of their fields in the journal as a whole. They will handle original research papers and review material: the ability to offer well-reasoned and timely editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice is crucial. They will liaise extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature family and experts in the international research community. Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for a Senior Editor position.

The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis (ideally starting in early Summer 2024). The position will ideally be located in our New York or Berlin offices, although requests for eventual placement in one of the other Nature edi
