Department Overview

OCCYSHN is Oregon's Title Five public health agency for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN). Title Five federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau block grants help states support the health, safety, and well-being of mothers and children.

Function/Duties of Position

The Communications and Marketing Specialist is responsible for internal and external communications and service as the primary material producer and author for OCCYSHN. This includes producing and managing all OCCYSHN’s statewide communications, providing strategic guidance, content oversight, authoring, editing, and branding. The position fosters communications with statewide partners and stakeholders to advance OCCYSHN priorities. The Communication & Marketing Specialist is also responsible for producing internal and external communications for the Center Director. They will also serve as a liaison to funnel communication needs from OCCYSHN to relevant central communications, marketing departments, and our MCH partners at Oregon Health Authority.

 

Responsible for the quality and coherence of OCCYSHN’s written communications, presentations, web content, and social media. OCCYSHN audiences include statewide public health administrators, health care providers, policymakers, legislators, families of children with special health needs, and OHSU stakeholders. This position ensures that OCCYSHN staff understand and use health literacy best practices, and that OCCYSHN content is culturally and linguistically appropriate.

 

The Communications and Marketing Specialist ensures OCCYSHN’s annual block grant report to the U.S. Maternal and Child Health Bureau coherently and accurately describes how OCCYSHN uses the funds to improve the wellbeing of the CYSHCN population in Oregon.

 

The Communications and Marketing Specialist position requires an in-depth understanding OCCYSHN’s mission, goals, and grant requirements. It also requires knowledge of public health systems and practices at local, statewide, and federal levels. The position helps OCCYSHN foster strategic partnerships to advocate effectively for the population of CYSHCN. Strong collaboration skills are necessary, as are the ability to plan and work independently.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications or related degree OR commensurate work experience lieu of degree.
  • 5 years’ experience in corporate communications, journalism or related field such as public health, social work, or related field.
  • Experience with public health principles and practices.
  • Experience in development, design, and production of key program products.
  • Excellent written communication skills including original writing and editing.
  • Ability to design and implement communication strategies.
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign and Adobe Acrobat Professional.
  • Excellent team player who is also capable of self-direction and is comfortable working with others and achieving results by collaborating with many different OCCYSHN programs and individuals.
  • Training with OHSU website content management system (currently “DRUPLE”).
  • Knowledgeable of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau Title V Block grant and the scope of work assigned to the Title V children with special health care needs programs within the block grant.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Title V MCH/CYSHCN Block Grant Experience with systems of care for children with special needs.
  • Graphic design skills.
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop.
  • Ability to effectively utilize social media on behalf of public health programs.
