About the role
Summary of Essential Functions
- Works under direction of and as assistant to the Physical Therapist.
- Responsible for implementing specific treatment programs for individual patients and patient groups according to the principles and practices of a Physical Therapist Assistant.
- Collaborates with the interdisciplinary treatment team.
Educational Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Associate degree from an accredited school in physical therapy or equivalent training from a recognized institution.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Licenses and Certifications
- Current Texas PTA license.
- CPR Certification.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Able to perform treatment under the plan of care established by a physical therapist, observe changes in patient status, and communicate changes to the physical therapist.
- Demonstrate supervisory skills when working with technicians.
- Good communication and teaching skills.
Physical Requirements
- Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Potential for musculoskeletal injuries due to moving/lifting equipment and patients: potential for exposure to infectious process.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Applies and operates appropriate department equipment according to department standards.
- Maintains a safe, clean and secure environment with well stocked supplies and properly functioning equipment.
- Administers active and passive therapeutic exercises, therapeutic massage, and modalities treatments.
- Assists patients to learn and improve functional activities; including transfers, ambulation, and Activities of Daily Living.
- Observes patients during treatments and complies and evaluates data on patient’s responses to treatments and progress and reports orally or in writing to Therapist.
- Fits patients for, adjusts, and trains patients in use and care of orthopedic braces, prostheses, and supportive devices such as crutches, canes, and walkers.
- Gives orientation to new Physical Therapist Assistants and directs and gives instructions/monitors to Rehab aides/techs.
- Participates and/or assists in department performance improvement activities.
- Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
