Job Overview

The Director of Research and AI Technology is responsible for driving the university's research enterprise by blending enterprise Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategy with the IT needs of the research community. The role will provide strategic project management, development, and consultation for IT projects that support our research mission. This involves leading AI initiatives across the university, identifying opportunities to deploy solutions like enterprise chatbots and agents, and running stakeholder workshops to translate business needs into technical requirements.

A primary focus is managing the IT requirements for new and existing research projects across diverse fields, including chemistry, physics, biology, genomics, and bioinformatics. The role serves as a key partner to the research community, assisting with Data Use Agreements (DUAs) and ensuring all data security, handling, and processing methods comply with sponsor and legal requirements. This includes working closely with the Office of General Counsel and supporting the university's AI review process.

The position will lead a team of Research IT "Expert Resources" and ensure that all research technologies comply with UIS policies for network architecture and security. By fostering strong partnerships with faculty and administrative units, this position is critical to designing the technology solutions required for successful research programs, enhancing our ability to secure and sustain grants, contracts and help improve work efficiency overall across GU. This includes assuring the security, availability, recoverability, and optimum performance of all research databases and platforms. Position works under general direction to plan, develop and implement functions &/or projects.

Work Interactions

This position reports to the Assistant Vice President Research Support and AI Enablement. This position interacts with University Information Services, business stakeholders interested in adopting AI solutions across the university, senior level researchers, and decision makers within GU’s research community, such as, Office of Technology Commercialization, Office of General Counsel, Office Senior Vice President for Research; Office of the Dean of Research, GUMC; Office of the Vice Provost for Research; Office of Sponsored Research, Office of Research Services, Institutional Review Board, peers and stakeholders at MedStar Health Research Institute, as well as with representatives of sponsor agencies at both the Federal, State and local levels. The position also manages and supports a suite of critical research administration systems, including those for the GU-Medstar Institutional Review Board (IRB), Cayuse (IACUC), GUPASS (JORA), and Onsite (EH&S). In this capacity, the role will coordinate with all relevant offices (IRB, MedStar, IACUC, JORA, ORO, EH&S) to manage system upgrades, testing, and strategic enhancements, while identifying opportunities to consolidate applications and improve efficiency.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • BA or BS degree with 7+ years’ work experience in managing technology, e.g., Oracle, Salesforce or other relational database systems, network infrastructure and databases or technology applications

  • Minimum of 1 year designing or implementing generative or modern AI solutions

  • Minimum of 5 years providing technical support and project management to researchers in higher education or a related scientific industry.

  • 5 years + experience working in IT management consulting

  • Must understand how to protect the security and integrity of databases and applications on the system and through the network and must be familiar and have experience working with a variety of operating systems. 

  • Experience gathering business requirements, creating and maintaining process maps and backlog grooming based on business value

  • Experience mobilizing developers and business stakeholders to deliver technology projects

  • Be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and methodical.

  • Must be willing to participate in a 24x7 support
