Status: Full Time, 8 hour shift

Location: Main hospital, IV Room


General Purpose of Job:

The Clinical Pharmacist oversees the daily activities of the medication use process.  Additionally, they perform the duties of a registered pharmacist as defined by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy and Driscoll Children's Hospital.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct patient care by overseeing and verifying all IV doses prepared during the shift to ensure safety, accuracy, and compliance with standards.

  • Collaborate with pharmacy staff to ensure the safe, effective, and timely delivery of medications.

  • Monitor patients for optimal therapeutic outcomes; identify and intervene on allergies, drug interactions, duplications, or adverse drug reactions.

  • Verify appropriateness of medication orders based on diagnosis, age, weight, allergies, and drug interactions.

  • Recommend cost-effective, clinically appropriate alternative therapies and evaluate non-formulary medication requests.

  • Accurately process, verify, and enter medication orders; ensure timely filling, dispensing, and delivery of medications.

  • Supervise pharmacy technicians and support staff to promote efficient daily workflow.

  • Serve as a liaison to medical and nursing staff regarding pharmacy services and medication-related concerns.

  • Provide counseling to patients and families on medication use, including outpatient prescriptions.

  • Maintain accurate records for controlled substances, investigational drugs, and required documentation.

  • Participate in staff training, student/preceptor activities, quality improvement initiatives, and ongoing professional education.

  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and corporate integrity guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited College of Pharmacy with a B.S. or PharmD degree. 

  • Experience: One to three years of hospital pharmacy experience is preferred.

  • Current licensure either by reciprocity or examination by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
