General Job Description

 

  • Meet all job requirements of a Respiratory Care Practitioner (job description #4140) as described in Duke University Hospital job description
  • Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities related to performing Pulmonary diagnostic/ Function Tests:
  1. Perform diagnostic breathing tests (PFTs) procedures to include:  carbon monoxide diffusion, flow-volume loops, lung volume determinations,( Body Plethysmography, N2 washout technologies), Airway resistance measurements, pre and post exercise spirometry, pre and post bronchodilator spirometry, ETCO-2 capnograph,  oxygen saturation via pulse oximetry.  Perform ABG puncture for gas analysis. Perform 6-minute walk testing and Oxygen Titrations. Respond to emergency or stat call to assist in establishing natural, artificial and mechanical airways that may require further airway establishment of care. Administration of medications used in conjunction with pulmonary procedures in accordance with physician’s orders. 
  2. Participate in calibration and routine maintenance QA/QC procedures on equipment.
  3. Demonstrate a knowledge of PFT standards as established by the American Thoracic Society, American Association for Respiratory Care.
  4. Provide clinical instruction on proper use of equipment to technicians, students, house staff, nurses, personnel and patients.  Communicate with physicians and providers to review and discuss diagnostic testing for individual patients.
  5. Knowledge of Non-Invasive ventilators and their application to Neuromuscular populations
  6. Assist in orientation and training of personnel, medical students and residents.  Assist in maintaining quality assurance, safety standard and policy manuals.
  7. Participate as a member of the Duke Adult Cystic Fibrosis team in patient evaluation, training, and recommending therapeutic intervention including Airway Clearance Therapy and aerosolized medication delivery devices. and non-invasive ventilators.
  8. Participate as a member of the Duke ALS and MD Clinic team in patient evaluation, training, and PFT testing.

 

Education Qualifications, and/or Certifications

  • Completion of a 2-year AMA approved respiratory care (Associates Degree) or equivalent
  • Hold Respiratory Care credentials (RRT; CRTT) as granted by The National Board for Respiratory Care
  • North Carolina State Licensure
  • Certification in BLS
  • Certification in ACLS

 

Experience

  • Six months to one year of general respiratory care clinical experience following graduation from a respiratory care program.
  • Experience performing full range of Pulmonary Function Testing  

 

Hours

  • Monday – Friday 8AM - 4:30 PM
