The Senior Associate Scientist position is an individual contributor role within the Surveillance, Prevention, and Health Services Research (SPHeRe) department, working under supervision. The role contributes to key elements of strategic development for an identified intramural project.

The role plays a key role in supporting the TCR team’s interdisciplinary, high-impact research by conducting comprehensive literature reviews, performing rigorous data analyses, and contributing to the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation at scientific conferences. This position collaborates closely with colleagues across ACS and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN). The Tobacco Control Research (TCR) team within the Department of Surveillance, Prevention & Health Services Research (SPHeRe) at the American Cancer Society (ACS) conducts cutting-edge research to advance and translate scientific knowledge, inform evidence-based tobacco control advocacy, reduce tobacco use and its associated burden of disease, and identify strategies to address disparities and promote health equity.

This is a full-time remote opportunity which can be home-based anywhere in the U.S.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Under the supervision of a senior staff member, conducts original research for publication in peer reviewed scientific journals related to tobacco control, with a substantial focus on using policy intervention as a public health tool 50%
  • Provides analytical and technical support to senior staff members. 20%
  • Engage as an active collaborator in the development of research protocols including literature reviews, development of database, data analyses, and manuscript writing for publication in peer reviewed journals and ACS reports. 15%
  • Disseminates information with minimal guidance and exchange information through both written and oral communication. 5%
  • Responds to surveillance, prevention, or health services research related inquiries from other components of ACS, the public, and the media. 5%
  • Assists with the publication of Facts & Figures as needed. 5%

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred Degree: Master's degree in public health, economics, biostatistics, epidemiology, health policy, ora a closely related field
  • Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor's Degree
  • Years of experience: 5 - 8 years of progressive experience performing advanced duties as an Associate Scientist II or equivalent.

Other Skills:

  • Experience working with a statistical software (STATA, R, or similar), EXCEL, word processing and presentation.
  • Strong knowledge of fundamental principles of public health and economics.
  • Experience conducting research with large databases.
  • Strong data management and econometric skills.
  • Excellent scientific writing and editing abilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in team-based environments.
  • Experience with online survey data collection and quantitative and qualitative data analysis is an added advantage.
