This Director will have oversight of both the Adults and Pediatrics Emergency Services.

A Brief Overview
The Director of Emergency Services is responsible for the overall leadership and functions of the Emergency Department. This position provides direction and leadership to implement and oversee nursing/ clinical care standards, practice and competencies for neonatal to geriatric patient population. The Director of Emergency Services assures that the department meets or exceeds expected outcome measures including patient satisfaction, employee/ staff safety, employee satisfaction, length of stay, clinical quality and standards. The Director will collaborate with quality management and external regulatory and accrediting entities to ensure all mandated services and standards are met and exceeded for both adult and pediatric patients that are seen. This position also manages department finances and business goals, including budgeting and control of salary, non-salary, and capital investment expenses. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining effective and responsive relationships with patients, managing professional and clerical staff – including interactions with each department at Stanford Health Care and liaison with Emergency Medical Services, San Mateo County, and Santa Clara County.

What you will do

  • Collaborates with Human Resources on the recruitment and selection of qualified employment candidates, following all policies, guidelines and applicable laws

  • Develops and implements policies that guide and support the provision of services; ensures that policies and procedures are compatible with the function and goals of SHC and which meet the external regulatory and statutory requirements.

  • Effectively assists in providing leadership, direction, and the administration of operations to ensure compliance with established institutional objectives and the delivery of optimal quality and safe health care services.

  • Effectively provides direction and policy interpretation to managers in managing their respective areas of responsibility; offers advice in handling special human resources matters and administrative concerns.

  • Ensures that departments/areas comply with or exceed all regulatory requirements including, but not limited to, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA, FDA and compliance with EMTALA regulations.

  • Guides the preparation of Hospital/departmental budgets and allocation of funds based upon reviews of department estimates/recommendations, familiarity with operating procedures and cost/revenue projections.

  • Integrates department's services with the hospital's primary functions by supporting organizational mission, priorities and goals, and by delivering optimal quality health care services.

  • Provides and maintains effective communications with medical staff, the community and all levels of supervision and staff. Regularly tours the facilities and service areas to identify opportunities for change and development.

  • Regularly measures staff's performance against established criteria-based performance standards; utilizes evaluations as an objective management tool for counseling staff members to higher levels of performance to facilitate their professional development and maximize their contribution towards established institutional goals. Always takes immediate action in serious disciplinary situations; documents actions taken and the rationale for the decision.

  • Reviews all department requests for capital expense items and submits same, with recommendations, to the Vice President


Education Qualifications

  • BSN required

  • Master degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business or other applicable fields


Experience Qualifications

  • Experience: 7-10 years of broad, extensive, and progressively responsible directly related work experience in administrative and/or managerial positions
