The Sr. System Engineer, Onshore Wind will focus on wind turbine systems engineering as part of the wind turbine generator engineering team within the Operations Engineering department of RWECE. The system engineers are specialists in the turbine as a system within the Onshore Wind Engineering team and provide support and expertise for the Development, Construction, and Operations of wind farms. This role will support the breadth of existing assets in the United States from the end of construction at a project site to repowering and decommissioning with effort on Operational success and needed repair at existing projects. The job also covers the support of the other engineers globally. As RWECE is growing in terms of managed assets as the existing fleet ages, the position supports the growing asset base and increasing maintenance needs, which often come with age.
Role Responsibilities:
- Perform turbine control and mechanical and electrical system issue dispositions.
- Improve a system to classify issues based on damage criticality, including low-risk periods for each failure mode
- Analyze the existing failure modes in the RWECE fleet
- Evaluate the criticality of each failure mode in terms of risk and cost
- Support of repair crews while performing complex diagnostics and repairs
- Evaluation of quality of work done by contractors
- Develop new and amend existing work instructions to be used on site
- Root cause analysis and corrective action using DMAIC and FMEA
- Monitor and report blade failure rates using reliability methodology
- Support the team with the blade maintenance strategy model revision and update, based on the previous operational data
- Technical due diligence of design and manufacturing with reliability forecasting
- Review of new materials and technology for reduction of Levelized Cost of Energy
- Work with the Technology and Innovation department to drive change and innovate
- Training, coaching, mentoring, and oversight of lesser experienced engineers
- Adhere to the Company’s values and behaviors as aspired to by RWECE
- Additionally, perform all other duties assigned as may be required from time to time
- Requires Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited university
- Advanced degree preferred
Job Requirements and Experience:
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant engineering experience preferred
- Demonstrated experience in blade damage assessment and expertise across multiple manufacturers (i.e., GE, Siemens, Vestas, Gamesa, Acciona, Nordex, Mitsubishi, Goldwind) and repair types is strongly preferred. Experience with a wind turbine Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) is preferred
- Working knowledge of equipment utilized in the renewable energy sector, including utility-scale wind turbines
- Knowledge of wind turbine loads, systems analysis, and reliability
- Knowledge of control methods, controllers, and SCADA systems
- Knowledge of grid connection, e.g., switchgear, breakers, filters, measurement,
- Knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, e.g., motors, gear drives, hydraulics, signaling, and sensing
- Knowledge of basic meteorology
- Knowledge of maintenance strategies
- Knowledge of industry standards and recommended practices
- Knowledge of data analytics, reduction, and reporting
- Demonstrated desire to learn about the Company and the renewables space
- Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Teams
- Strong leadership, communication, documentation,n and ability to meet deadlines
