University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing's Medical Surgical Cardiology Intermediate Care Unit is seeking a 50% Nursing Unit Clerk (NUC) to perform clerical, reception, and related duties relative to nursing care and services to patients.

Medical Surgical Cardiology Unit (4 RCP) – Gold Beacon Unit:

4RCP is a 47-bed unit providing care for adult medical cardiology, cardiac and thoracic surgery patients requiring telemetry monitoring, temporary cardiac pacing, vasoactive and anticoagulant medication infusions. The unit provides care to postoperative patients including esophagectomies, Nissen fundoplications, thoracotomies, heart transplantation, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve replacements and transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR). 4RCP also provides care to patients with cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, chest pain, post percutaneous coronary interventions, as well as arrhythmia management. In addition, the unit is certified to provide care to patients with left ventricular-assist-devices (LVAD). Through a multidisciplinary teamwork approach, 4RCP was awarded with a Gold Beacon Award for Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN); this is the only Gold Beacon Award in the state of Iowa. Our certifications include:

  • Joint Commission Advanced Disease Specific Certification for Ventricular Assist Device
  • Joint Commission Certification for Ventricular Assist Device Destination Therapy
  • Joint Commission Certification for Cardiac Valve Repair and Replacement
  • Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification for Aortic Aneurysm
  • Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification for Valve Repair and Replacement

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Communicates and interacts with patients, visitors, and other health care professionals in an effective manner and maintains positive, cooperative relationships

  • Utilizes and maintains electronic communication systems to ensure communication among the health care team members and patients/families, including text pagers,  locator badges, wireless phones, and other new systems

  • Provides information and direction to health care personnel and visitors coming to the unit, answers the telephone; takes and delivers messages and assists in keeping White Boards updated at least daily as appropriate

  • Helps to answer call lights, maintain call-light system, and relay information in a timely manner to appropriate team members

  • Proficient in navigating web-based resources and using online clinical and business applications

  • Performs computer functions within scope of role as defined by the individual unit

  • Maintains accurate census information; (e.g., timely ADT entry into IDX, Premise bed board activities, correct level of accommodation charges, and census reconciliation)

  • Processes patient charges including batching charges in a timely manner, as appropriate

  • Notifies appropriate health care profess
