General Description and Classification Standards

Operates light, medium, and heavy trucks and construction equipment for an assigned department. Duties include, but are not limited to transportation, loading, and unloading of equipment, equipment operation, basic inspection, and maintenance, and maintaining equipment logbooks as required. This is an intermediate level job and incumbents drive or operate vehicles and equipment that are more complex or in conditions that do typically require exceptional levels of skill or judgment. 

 

Supervision Received

Position operates under close supervision and may be under direct supervision as they are developing skills on or being certified to operate new equipment. 

 

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

Operates truck and other light-to-heavy equipment which may include flatbed truck, tandem truck, dump trucks, front-end loader, backhoe, excavator, skid-steer, concrete truck, pothole truck, large mowing, and/or cultivating or construction equipment, etc. in a safe and effective manner to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life. 

 

Maintains and secures all departmental vehicles and equipment which may include cleaning, performing minor repairs and/or reporting damages to supervision, locking vehicles, etc.

 

May haul various materials, such as: pipes, rocks, sand, gravel, stone, trash, etc. 

 

Uses equipment, tools, materials and supplies in the performance of work which may include granular spreader, steam cleaner, air compressor, battery charger, chain saws, sledgehammer, shovels, picks, rakes, fire extinguisher, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, and safety cones, etc. 

 

Prepares daily records equipment mileage, hours of operation, maintenance issues; performs vehicle check list which include duties such as checking oil, tires, and fluid levels of vehicle.

 

Reviews and signs documents such as, work orders, service request forms, attendance records, daily or weekly work reports, and preventive maintenance records. 

 

Acts in place of supervisor in his/her absence. 

 

Effectively communicates and interacts with management, employees, and members of the public.  

 

Decision Making

Works under general supervision; depending on the objective, may work within team or independently with responsibility for an assigned task or project. Follows standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

 

Leadership Provided

Typically, none; may oversee temporary or contract workers, as needed.
