If you answered yes to the above questions, we have an exciting opportunity for you to explore as a Park Caretaker.
The Park Caretaker reports directly to the Area/District Supervisor or designate as specified. As the Park Caretaker, you are responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the designated Provincial Camping Park(s), and in some cases, Day Use Park(s) including: all infrastructure, vehicles, grounds and equipment.

Primary Accountabilities

  You will also be responsible for:
  • Day to day staff direction, supervision and training.
  • Ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and department policies.
  • Actively participating in the implementation of departmental OH&S Policy and Programs.
  • Managing daily camping fee collection (Necessary accounting and security of the fees).
  • Protecting client financial/credit card information.
  • Security of camp sites and campers.
  • Providing visitor information.
  • Assisting in the development and delivery of a park based education program.
  • Monitoring park activities for regulation compliance.
  • Advising visitors of park regulations and reporting non-compliance to conservation officers.
  • Ensuring all water meets provincial drinking water standards.

This position requires the ability to work as part of a team, as well as performing strenuous manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Duties often require working irregularly scheduled hours, weekends, evenings and holidays. Participation in department training related to the duties of this position is required.

Qualifications and Experience

  This could be the right job for you if you have the following skills and experience:
  • Four (4) years of related experience, which can include:
    • General carpentry, building and grounds maintenance, general machine maintenance
    • Use of tractors, ride-on mowers, push mowers, string trimmers and hand and power tools.
    • Supervising and evaluating the work of others
  • Valid NS Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
  • Valid (Standard) First Aid Certificate and WHMIS training.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and sanitation requirements.
  • Experience in the development and / or delivery of education programs.
  • Customer service training.
  • Training, experience in or demonstrated ability for ensuring compliance of Regulations in a public setting.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Working knowledge and previous experience in computer use including: internet, email, CAMIS and web-based applications.
