SUMMARY:
The Director of Workforce Relations is responsible for overseeing the Employee Relations, Labor Relations & Medical Clinic functional teams. The Director is responsible for guiding and collaborating with executive leadership to identify, develop, and deploy strategic employee and labor relations policies and initiatives supporting the company’s objectives. The Director will also oversee the strategic management of the onsite medical clinic and occupational health and welfare programs. This role must demonstrate high integrity, solid work ethics and a commitment to leading diverse teams. This position reports to the VP of Human Resources and directs staff of approximately 20 exempt and non-exempt employees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
- Develop, implement, and deploy Human Resources policies, procedures, and initiatives relating to all workforce relations activities, including investigations, employee discipline, performance improvement, separations and reductions in force, leave administration and reasonable accommodations
- Provide direct leadership to a team of Human Resources and Medical Team professionals
- Serve as trusted advisor to senior leaders and executives on workforce relations matters
- Provide oversight on investigations and compliance-related issues, including HR support and response to agency charges and other legal matters
- Develop and implement comprehensive compliance strategies and HR policies, ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Negotiate multi-union collective bargaining agreements, direct the administration of all collective bargaining agreements, and lead all union/management labor relations throughout the enterprise
- Oversee the strategic administrative operations for the onsite Medical Clinic and wellness programs
- Provide guidance and support to satellite operations regarding workforce relations strategies
- Actively participate and champion continuous improvement initiatives aimed to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.S. degree in a related discipline, Master’s or higher degree preferred
- Seven to ten years of direct experience in a similar role preferred
- Demonstrated ability to work with and communicate effectively with all levels of personnel
- Demonstrated ability to develop strategic solutions to a wide variety of employee relations, labor relations, with the ability to organize and lead cross-functional teams
- Proven ability to work with unions and within the collective bargaining environs; collective bargaining experience necessary
- Strong business and financial acumen, facilitation and conflict resolution skills
- Proven influencer with demonstrated senior leadership attributes
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work primarily conducted in an office setting with good lighting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing. Must be physically able to commute to buildings throughout the shipyard. Occasional exposure to dust, fumes and moderate levels of noise.
