Description:

Under the supervision of a social worker who meets state required standards, the social workers in these two position openings will fulfill roles as Heart and Lung Social Worker, Donor Social Worker, and Independent Living Donor Advocate (ILDA). There is a total of 1.5 FTE available: 0.5 FTE for Heart & Lung, 0.5 FTE for Donor Social Work, and 0.5 FTE for ILDA. Job share options include 1.0 FTE split between ILDA/Heart & Lung or Donor Social Work/Heart & Lung, with the remaining 0.5 FTE available for either ILDA or Donor Social Work.

The Heart & Lung Social Worker and the Donor Social Worker conducts comprehensive psychosocial assessments, individual psychotherapy, treatment plans, and support, including coordination of discharge planning for potential kidney and liver donors or heart and lung transplant recipients through all phases of care including pre-donation/pre-transplantation, donation,/transplant, and post-donation/post-transplant.

The ILDA ensures potential living kidney and liver donors have an advocate to speak to who is not associated with the potential recipient team and is independent of the decision to transplant the potential recipient. The ILDA advocates for the rights of the living donor through all phases of care including pre-donation, donation, and post-donation. The ILDA assesses and documents the donor’s understanding of informed consent, evaluation, surgery, and follow up requirements. The ILDA also educates on the process for filing and addressing any grievances and assists with this process.

All positions collaborate with the multidisciplinary transplant team, comply with required standards for medical/legal responsibilities, and serve as a resource to other allied and administrative staff within the Section of Social Work and the Department of Nursing.

Social worker with current licensure at the clinical level and eligible to practice independently. An MSW degree is also required from an accredited Social Work program. Candidates must have an advanced knowledge of mental illness, personality development, knowledge of the types of treatment, and skills in conducting individual, group, and family therapy. Must have knowledge of adjustment to medical diagnosis’ and chronic disease. Strong communication skills are needed to interact with patients, patient’s family members, multi-disciplinary team, community agencies, and other resources. Must also have psychosocial diagnostic skills and the ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and in written form. Licensure to practice independently at the clinical level as required by applicable state requirements. Valid driver's license required for specific specialty areas.

Preferred: Knowledgeable about living organ donation, transplantation, medical ethics, and informed consent.
