Biobank Lab Support Specialist

The Opportunity:

In this role, you will report to the Supervisor, Onsite Services and will work closely with the Avantor’s Lab and Production Services team of over 1,500 on- and off-site expert personnel – and our customers – to perform customized, mission-based lab work and research protocols that help return time back to science.

Location: Waltham, MA 02401

Schedule: Mon – Fri, ~ 7:30 am – 4 pm

Wage: $27-29 per hour

What we’re looking for:  

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience) required, degree in biology or related discipline considered a plus.

• Lab environment work experience required.  

• Microsoft Office Suite with strong Excel skills required.  

• Covid-19 vaccination required.            

• Experience working with Safety Health Environment (SHE) lab policies and procedures desired.

• Proficient in data capture, analysis and reporting using various IT systems.

• Problem solving capabilities and confidence to make clear decisions sometimes with limited information.

• Ability to work with scientists, other teams, supplies, and various collaborators of different backgrounds in a matrix environment used to deliver results.

• Clear and concise written and spoken communication skills.

• Ability to influence people at all levels to deliver improvements in operational effectiveness.

• Excellent planning, organizational, analytical, and networking skills.

Avantor’s Lab and Production Services team is a crucial part of the Avantor Services group serving over 500 customers in biopharma, pharmaceutical, educational, industrial, and high-tech industries with customizable, flexible solutions and end-to-end laboratory operations support.

In this role you will:

• Sample management including manual and electronic tracking, maintaining delivery paperwork, packing and securing, documenting packaging contents, and coordinating with shipping team to stage items. 

• Material management of Human Biological Samples (HBS) paying close attention to biosafety, privacy, and ethical considerations.

• Documentation and inventory management of HBS such as labeling and accessioning into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), handling and storage of equipment in -80C and -180C LN2 freezers and ambient cabinets.

• Routine maintenance and performance checks of some equipment as trained by the customer's scientists.

• Disposal of HBS per customer’s processes.

• Helps clean certain areas in the lab, especially if a safety issue occurs.

• Fills in for team members that service the bioscience group, especially media prep.

• Assists in BSC cleanings and lab coat program.

• Identifies and promptly flags issues in the lab and communicates with the customer's laboratory manager.

• Performs standard SOPs for various activities in the lab, and writes new SOPs as needed.

• Works with scientists and onsite Avantor teams to ensure consumables inventories are accurate and overall oversight of consumables/usage/change requirements.
