JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Penn State University Press seeks a bright, energetic intern to assist our acquisitions department. The candidate will provide support for one Associate Editor in the obtaining of images and permissions associated with Pennsylvania: A History of the Commonwealth, 2nd Edition, edited by Randall R. Miller. The position gives the intern an opportunity to learn about third-party rights and permissions. Responsibilities include contacting granting institutions to obtain copyright and reproduction permissions to reproduce images in the volume, tracking this information on spreadsheets, and communicating with the volume editor.
This is a demanding but exciting job at a scholarly press, with the opportunity to work on an important revised edition on the press’ well-regarded list in Pennsylvania history. Interns must possess the ability to interact effectively with individuals from a variety of cultures and backgrounds and perform their duties in accordance with the Press’ commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The successful candidate will be efficient, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize work and function independently. Candidates should also have a strong interest in publishing as a career, but do not need to be English majors. Excellent oral and written communication skills and good organizational abilities are essential. The intern must possess the ability to interact effectively with individuals from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. This internship is excellent training for any career path in publishing. Penn State University Press interns have gone on to work with such publishers as Elsevier, McGraw-Hill, Houghton-Mifflin, Macmillan, MIT Press, NYU Press, Oxford University Press, Princeton University Press, O'Reilly & Associates, University of California Press, Thames & Hudson, the American Society for Cancer Research, Highlights, and other institutions such as libraries, museums, and communications companies.
