Summary

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD Skillbridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD Skillbridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. HII Mission Technologies Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with HII. 

 

For this internship, the Skillbridge intern will train as a Master Trades Person within HII-Mission Technologies, reporting to a designated HII Supervisor, with the goal of learning truck mechanics and diesel engine specialist principles to support their repair.  The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.

 

Desired End State (3-4 month target)

  • At the end of four months, the intern will be able to develop skills needed to schedule, track, assess, and repair rakes, steering/suspension, engine repair, electrical systems, heating/air conditioning and automatic transmissions, truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists.
  • The intern will develop a good understanding of advance automobile technician skills. This includes:
  • Familiarity with schedule, track, assess, and repair equipment.
  • Planning and scheduling of Navy Preventive Maintenance Systems, both ashore and afloat.
  • Advanced diagnostics and repair.
  • Collaboration/Coordination with Ships Force to provide a “Hands On” approach/ technique specific to the Sailors individual strengths. 
  • Mission Technologies will benefit from the military background of the Skillbridge intern and considers the Skillbridge internship an overall positive experience. 


Assumptions/Restrictions

  • If candidate is selected and approved, Skillbridge Intern can travel in conjunction with this internship; HII Mission Technologies.
  • Skillbridge Intern will be available during core hours (7:30 AM to 4:00 PM) for critical meetings and training.

Program of Instruction

Training Location: Fort Eustis, VA
 

Training Plan 

Phase 1 - Basics 

  • Week 1: In processing, Introductions/office familiarization.
  • Week 2: Introduction to Fuel Injection systems, Hydraulic system, Air Conditioning HP/LP.
  • Week 3: Introduction to Automotive Repair Parts, Work Request (AWR) through OMMS-NG.
  • Week 4: Introduction to the building a work package for scheduled work, and track to completion.

 
Phase 2 – Master Trades Technician Operations 

  • Week 5: Collaborate/Coordinate with Contractors/Ships Force to complete mechanical and electrical system maintenance checks on board and report assigned/designated Civil Engineering Support Equipment (CESE).
  • Week 6: Collaborate/Coordinate with users/Ships Force to perform mechanical and electrical system maintenance checks on board and report assigned/designated Civil Engineering Support Equipment (CESE) with Team Lead or Senior technician. 
  • Week 7: By direction of Team Lead provide mechanical and electrical system maintenance with customer/Ships Force in the field.
  • Week 8: Shadow Team Lead or Senior technician with a close out and op-test of equipment in the field.
  • Week 9: Collaborate
