About the role

Description

Southwestern University, located in Georgetown has an immediate opening for the Assistant Vice President for Development, Planned Giving position. This position serves as a major gift officer focusing on securing significant contributions to advance the institution's future. This role also includes overseeing and mentoring the Director of Stewardship and the Assistant Director of University Events. This position also serves as the University Relations’ Gift Planning Specialist. Key responsibilities involve marketing, soliciting, closing, and stewarding planned gifts, alongside providing support to senior leadership with complex asset donations when necessary. This is a full-time, fully benefited, exempt position that reports to the Associate Vice President for Development.

Primary Duties:                                             

  • This position will identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors.
  • Exceed annual Performance Measure goals through contacts, solicitations, and closures.
  • Exceed annual fund, current restricted, endowment, and capital/plant goals that are assigned to the portfolio each year.
  • Ensures the development and execution of a comprehensive marketing and communications plan for the gift planning program including e-newsletters, maintenance of the gift planning website, and advertising in University publications.
  • Arranges and delivers educational seminars for a wide range of constituents of the University and outreach to professional advisors.
  • Manages the ongoing recognition and stewardship of major and planned giving donors, including the 1840 Society.
  • Provides gift vehicle technical advice in written and oral form directly to prospects, their legal and/or financial advisors, and members of the development office staff.
  • Manages the University Relations office of Stewardship, Planned Giving and University Events including staff, budget.
  • Demonstrates professional etiquette with all internal and external University constituents.

Additional Duties:

  • Develops a new model of Stewardship that exceeds current industry standards.
  • Records and tracks all planned gifts on the University database.
  • Supports and participates in University events.
  • Coordinates the Committee for Gift Acquisitions.
  • Serve as the staff liaison to professional planned giving, legal and financial advisors.
  •  Adhere to the University’s core values.
  • Performs well in stressful situations that may arise.
  • Maintains a regular and consistent work schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Position Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 5 years of development or related experience.
  • 1-year supervisory experience.
  • Possess knowledge of planned gift vehicles.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Experience in supervisory and management roles.
  • Possesses leadership skills and a professional work ethic.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks with high levels of concentration and accuracy as well as meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.
  • Possess the applications of tact, diplomacy, sensitivity, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to attend work consistently and maintain a regular work schedule.
  • Ability to understand and commit to a liberal arts education, including the ability to relate to a liberal arts faculty.

Preferred Position Requirements: 

  • Experience working in a small, liberal arts institution
  • 2 plus years’ experience in a supervisory role in planned gift fundraising, major gift fundraising,
