We are on a journey of continuous growth – now looking for our next star – a passionate Contract Packaging Engineer within our Engineering capability. This position reports to Director, Product Development and will have a preferred work location in Elkhart, IN.

    About the position

    As a Packaging Engineer in the Engineering team, you will be responsible for the development of new packaging concepts in an industrial manufacturing environment. Primary responsibilities will be to support multiple manufacturing locations in the Land Vehicle Americas Segment to execute packaging projects from concept through commercialization for products currently in production as well as for future products that are currently in development.

    The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of common materials used to package finished products produced in an industrial manufacturing environment. Experience with sustainable packaging solutions is a plus. In this position the candidate will also apply excellent organizational, project management, technical problem solving and communication (written and verbal) skills, with the ability to work in teams in multiple locations.

    Your main responsibilities

    • Leads complex projects or assignments within large projects with minimal supervision.
    • Build, modify, and approve engineering drawings using Solid Works, Creo, or similar software applications.
    • Lead packaging qualification activities by generating packaging protocols, overseeing test execution, analyzing test data, and authoring qualification reports.
    • Provide technical expertise for packaging risk assessments and failure mode/root cause analyses.
    • Initiate and coordinate packaging line trials including planning, conducting and post-trial activities.
    • Partner with sourcing and production departments to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging.
    • Able to identify areas of cost savings or improvements to new and already launched products.
    • Collaborate with multi-functional teams (i.e. Manufacturing, Process Development, Marketing, Quality, Sourcing, Product Development, etc.) in pre-commercial and commercial activities to produce an optimized packaging solution.

    A suitable background would be experience with developing new packaging concepts and manufacturing experience– as well as the following qualifications and experiences:

    • Bachelor’s degree in packaging or mechanical engineering
    • Minimum 3 years’ experience in packaging development with familiarity with an assembly manufacturing environment.

    Physical Requirements

    • Normal manufacturing environment.
    • Must be able to lift and move items weighing up to 50 lbs.
    • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time in a manufacturing environment.
    • Domestic and international travel will be necessary (minimum 30%).

    • Self-motivated, self-directed, goal oriented, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
    • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite, SolidWorks, AutoCAD or equivalent (AS400 and D365 knowledge a plus.)
