Senior Manager, Performance Engineering

Available Locations: Hybrid - New York City and London

Role Summary

We're looking for a Senior Manager, Engineering to lead our Performance Engineering (PERF) team. The PERF team is crucial for ensuring Cloudflare's production systems are fast, responsive, and scalable. This includes system software, services, products, and solutions running on our infrastructure.

Our core mission is to empower everyone at Cloudflare to prioritize performance. The PERF team achieves this by:

• Developing and maintaining tools to pinpoint performance issues in products and services.
• Proactively driving cross-functional initiatives for system software tuning and architectural performance improvements.
• Assisting and providing training in debugging and analysis of performance.

Ultimately, the team's primary goal is to deliver a best-in-class experience on Cloudflare's infrastructure for both internal products and external customers, directly supporting our business scaling to $5B.

What You'll Do

As a Senior Manager, you will:

• Lead and grow a high-performing team by hiring, mentoring, and coaching highly capable Software Engineers.
• Drive significant performance improvements at both the system and datacenter levels.
• Collaborate closely with Product and Engineering stakeholders to prioritize, plan, and execute projects effectively.
• Ensure clear communication of status and impact through various tools, discussions, and meetings.
• Leverage your technical expertise to scope projects, facilitate cross-team collaboration, and unblock initiatives.

What You Bring

We're looking for someone with:

• 4+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager leading Software Engineers.
• Deep understanding of performance measurement and evaluation, including compute platform internals like CPU, memory, Operating System (Linux), and networking and their impact on performance.
• Proven ability to plan, build, and oversee execution to meet commitments and deliver predictably.
• A strong track record of managing high-performing teams, including successful hiring, onboarding, and professional development. You inspire your team to achieve more and are adept at explaining both the "why" and the "how."
• Experience implementing tools, processes, and internal instrumentation to resolve blockages.
• Comfort managing distributed teams and projects across multiple locations and time zones, often with tight deadlines and short release cycles.
• Exceptional clarity in both written and verbal communication.
• Hands-on experience with Jira, Grafana, and Prometheus.
• Nice to have
• Proficiency in systems programming languages such as C (kernel), Go, Rust, and scripting languages like Bash and Python, as well as experience with Salt/SaltStack.

Compensation may be adjusted depending on work location.
