General Utility Job Description

 

JOB DESCRIPTION: The General Utility employee will be responsible for maintaining the overall plant cleanliness.  This will ensure a safe, and effective work environment for the plant.

Top rate: $17.16/hour with differential when working off shifts.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

GENERAL UTILITY DUTIES:

• Operation: Familiarize yourself with the different operations in the plant.

• • Fiberline
  • Sizer
  • Primeline
  • Banding
  • Wrapping 
  • Mark full raw loads of doorskins correctly.              

• Housekeeping: The following areas need to be kept clean, and orderly on a daily basis.

• • Properly dispose of waste, and surplus material. 
  • Hog rejects when time permits.   
  • Operate forklift.

• • • Aisles
    • Refiner
    • Blender
    • Racks
    • Battery stand
    • Breakroom
    • Breaker room(s)
    • Silo pads

SAFETY:

• Use all available safety equipment and keep all safety guards in place.
• Wear eye, ear, and foot protection when required.
• Use extreme caution when working on or around machinery.
• Know and use “JELD-WEN’s Lock-Out”, welding tag-out, and firewatch procedures.
• Know and be able to locate the designated areas for first aid, MSDS/HMIS forms, radioactive material, and

      fire-fighting equipment.

• Observe and follow HMIS/MSDS requirements.
• Know locations of all master switches, and emergency stops for your work area.
• Respirator/dust mask are required while using an air hose for cleaning, or when high levels of dust is in the

      air.

• Keep work area clean, and orderly.
• Complete forklift-training program and pass operator’s test.

COMMUNICATION:

• Prepare clear, and concise records (time sheets) of each day's events, and accomplishments.
• Communicate with the Manager at the beginning of shift to receive special work assignments daily.
• Immediately inform your Manager of supply problems, hazards, and accidents or injuries.

 

• Inform the Operators of your presence when working in their area.

QUALITY:

• Know door-skin grading specifications, style, and size.
• Know pallet specifications:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Lift heavy loads, up to 50 lbs., frequently.
• Stand 2 to 3 hours continuously between break times.
• Use hand and power tools in a safe manner.
• Climb stair, and ladder accesses to work, and maintenance areas.
• Climb to high areas for maintenance, and repairs.
• Enter confined space areas.

MAINTENENCE:

• Perform minor repairs and assist Millwright with major repairs when requested.
• Report all worn or malfunctioning equipment.
• Responsible for performing preventative maintenance on the loader.  Inspect for mechanical defects and check all fluid levels at the beginning of shift.  Check the conditions of the tires.
• Be able to change forklift batteries, and refill propane tanks.

• Be able to relieve Grader on fiber-line, and cross train other positions in the plant when time permits.
