The Department
Cultural retention centers on college campuses make a powerful difference in student learning and retention and fosters an environment that promotes leadership development, critical thinking, a sense of belonging, cultural identity, and academic growth—all components for engagement in the learning process. This role will work with the Centers for Transformation, Retention, Equity, and Empowerment (T.R.E.E.)- department-specifically the API (Asian and Pacific Islander) Student Center, in building, leading, and executing programs and services within a CSU Grant focused on closing the equity gap for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) students.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist with Program Development & Coordination: APISC Mentorship Program (AMP)
- Assist in coordinating and facilitating the AMP with guidance from the APISC Coordinator. Support with tracking of mentorship program including marketing, recruitment, matching, workshops, socials and ongoing support for mentees and volunteer faculty/staff mentors of the AMP program.
- Train student staff in mentoring skills, facilitation skills, conflict resolution skills, and resource navigation.
- Assist with overseeing daily operations of programs and be able to anticipate needs and potential situations.
- Assist with program materials purchasing; classroom and facilities reservations; campus dining and catering orders; as well as managing and processing timely payment of these. • Support with planning and leading information sessions, presentations, campus visits for prospective, incoming, and continuing students and families.
Culturally Relevant Workshops/Events
- Develop and execute culturally relevant workshops and events with a focus on mental health and wellness, career development and readiness, academic success, leadership development and cultural conscience development.
- Assist in the development of faculty and staff trainings and engagements that bring awareness of the APIMEDA community.
- Co-develop an assessment tool that analyzes the impact of trainings and engagements. Summer Pacific Islander Institute.
- Support staff in the execution of a summer institute for high school and incoming Pacific Islander students. Assist with the logistical coordination of participant recruitment, room reservations, hotel accommodations, meals, vendors, and campus departments.
- Support the creation and development of the institute curriculum including workshops, presenters, speakers, activities, and enrichment opportunities.
Advising/Coaching
- Apply student development theory principles when working with students. • Provide coaching to identified student groups and individuals.
- When appropriate meet with students regarding emotional, behavioral, and/or academic concerns by coordinating initial meeting with students and utilize interpersonal, fact gathering, and analytical skills to determine the severity of the situation and respond accordingly.
- Refer students to campus programs and services when appropriate.
- When appropriate participate/attend advising community trainings/workshops.
Outreach and Training
- Collaborate with department communication specialists to prepare marketing materials.
- Help with drafting correspondence to various groups of prospective, incoming and continuing students.
- Support with coordinating marketing efforts with other key departments who are communicating with prospective students to ensure the accurate and timely receipt of information.
- Engage with prospective students, incoming students, and parents about CPP and opportunities for engagement.
- Support with designing, development, and implementation of training for relevant campus faculty and staff regarding the APIMEDA student populations.
- Assist with regular communication and contact with support staff, faculty and other campus stakeholders to ensure alignment, transparency and smooth operations.
Leadership
- Assist in the recruitment and selection process of student leaders.
