A post-doctoral research fellow position is available in the Hatch Lab in the Basic Sciences Division. We study the structure and dynamics of the human nuclear envelope, with a primary interest in why and how nuclear membranes rupture and repair, and how defects in nuclear membrane stability impact cancer development (Gunn, Yashchenko, and Hatch, bioRxiv, 2023, DiPeso et al., bioRxiv, 2023, Mammel, Gunn, and Hatch, LSA, 2021; Maciejowski and Hatch, Ann Rev Cell Dev Biol, 2020). The Hatch lab uses a variety of techniques to achieve these goals with a focus on microscopy, automated image analysis, and cell-based tool development.
Responsibilities
The fellow will be responsible for defining, in discussion with Dr. Hatch, and executing a project related to the core interests of the lab with the goal of developing a new line of inquiry that the fellow could start their own research program with, if desired. Current areas of interest are: identifying and characterizing the molecular mechanism of proteins that regulate nuclear membrane rupture and repair, determining how chromatin regulates nuclear lamina organization and membrane stability in micronuclei, identifying and defining the mechanisms of the cellular consequences of micronucleation and nucleus rupture, and developing new models to investigate how nuclear rupture and micronucleation impact cell transformation and tumor progression. The development of collaborative projects with other labs at Fred Hutch is of substantial interest. The fellow will also be required to apply to relevant fellowship opportunities within the Hutch and from outside organizations.
Strong candidates will have demonstrated excellent abilities to independently design, execute, and interpret experiments, synthesize literature into working models, identify and communicate with scientists outside their lab to learn new techniques or topics, and effectively communicate the significance of their research in oral and written presentations.
Qualifications
- A PhD in biology is required.
- First authorship on a published manuscript, or one in submission, is required.
- The ability to clearly and efficiently communicate data, both in writing and verbally, is required.
- The ability to work independently is required.
