Position SummaryThe Executive Director Medical Excellence will serve as a key strategic leader within Global Medical Affairs, reporting directly to the SVP, Global Medical Affairs and sitting on the Global Medical Affairs Senior Leadership Team. This role is responsible for designing and running the operating system across Global Medical Affairs — the processes, tools, metrics, and governance that enable Amicus to deliver scientific and medical excellence worldwide. The focus is on ensuring that the Medical Affairs organization functions with clarity, consistency, and compliance across all regions, while accelerating the translation of science into impact for patients across the Amicus indications portfolio. This position ensures that Amicus’ scientific strategy is delivered with operational excellencethat is aligned worldwide, locally adaptable, and compliant. This role goes beyond execution to shape how Global Medical Affairs delivers value, enabling speed, consistency, and measurable impact across the enterprise.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Create a framework for seamless integration and collaboration across Global Medical Affairs functions and Regions overseeing systems, processes and budgeting.
- Oversee and optimize critical centralized functions including Medical Information, Grants, Project Management and Material Review ensuring effectiveness, compliance, and quality across all markets.
- Design and implement scalable processes, tools, and data visibility frameworks that allow Global Medical Affairs to operate within an integrated, high-performing global system.
- Drive strategic integration and governance to ensure Global Medical Affairs leadership structures (Global Medical Affairs Senior Leadership, Medical Affairs Leadership, International Medical Leadership and US Medical Leadership teams) operate effectively within their unique purposes, with decisions made at the right levels and alignment and integration maintained across geographies and therapeutic areas.
- Build, mentor and empower a Global Medical Affairs operations team, extending capacity by embedding key partners from IT, Finance, HR, and Compliance into the operating framework.
- Provide infrastructure and measurement systems (KPIs, dashboards, analytics) that allow Global Medical Affairs to continuously improve and demonstrate its contribution to patient and business outcomes for maximal impact.
Educational Requirements
- Advanced degree (e.g., MS, MBA, or higher) preferably in life sciences and/or business
Professional Work Experience Requirements
- 10+ years in pharma, biotech, or life-science medical affairs/scientific roles.
- Minimum 5+ years in Medical Operations, or Medical Excellence roles.
- Proven track record of successfully managing people and teams in a matrix environment
Other skills/Attributes
- Proven track record in global, cross-functional leadership (U.S. and ex-U.S.) within Global Medical Affairs.
- Experience in process design, governance, SOP development, and operational excellence—
- Experience managing budgets, vendors, technology systems, and contracts.
- History of building or scaling integrated teams in matrix organizations.
- Demonstrated success delivering complex programs or launches through collaboration.
- Experience with successful partnering with IT, Finance, HR, and analytics in cross-functional settings.
- Demonstrated alignment with Amicus Mission Focus Behaviors
- Passion for rare disease and patient focused
- Emotionally intelligent leader capable of influencing without authority and driving integration
Travel
- 30% travel US and International as needed
Compensation and Benefit Summary
- The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is between $245,000 and $270,000 year. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. In addition to the base salary, employees may be eligible for various benefits, including health insurance, retirement plan (401K), paid time off, performance-based bonuses, stock options, restricted stock units, and other discretionary awards.
