Job Summary:

Provides leadership to the Phlebotomists, organizing and overseeing the day-to-day activities, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the patient reception/drawing area of the laboratory according to established protocols. Collects and processes appropriate patient specimens and samples for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease to conduct medical laboratory testing. Acts as a leader among other Phlebotomists; leads a team in the performance of phlebotomy and specimen collection.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience:

  • High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI
  • Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred
  • Three years' technical experience: Preferred
  • Laboratory operations experience: Preferred

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician CPT I or CPT II or National Healthcareer Association phlebotomy certification (CPT-NHA) or National Center for Competency phlebotomy certification (CPT-NCCT): Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI

Facility Specific License/Certifications:

  • Phlebotomy Tech (CPT) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (CPTII) or NHA Certified Phlebotomy Tech (CPT-NHA) or Phlebotomy Tech-NCCT (NCCT-CPT): Required

Essential Functions:

  • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks. Verifies specimen identification and appropriateness of sample type/volume for the indicated testing. Processes samples using aseptic technique and prepares required paperwork for appropriate testing and reference lab testing. Confers with patients to obtain information for laboratory records, and to explain procedures.
  • Recognizes and reports abnormal results to ordering provider, calling critical results within the appropriate timeframe. Documents all laboratory tests and results appropriately on logs and patient records per requirements. Maintains updated files, including quality files and equipment documentation. Is responsible for maintaining supply inventory.
  • Monitors and maintains equipment as needed per regulations, interfacing with clinical engineering and technical consultant when appropriate. Follows established guidelines for missed collections, recollects, and difficult phlebotomies. Orders supplies, noting expiration dates, usage, and delivery times for stock and non-stock items.
  • Maintains updated files, including quality files, equipment documentation, MSDS, safety, preventive maintenance, disaster procedures, etc. Ensures department is properly staffed and trains staff as needed. Runs quality controls daily as needed as well as other required testing. Performs proficiency testing per regulatory agency procedures and documented according to established guidelines. Assists to maintain up to date department policies and procedures for testing and equipment.
  • Is responsible for assisting in the creation of the monthly work schedule, consulting with laboratory leadership when problems arise, and consult with staff to provide schedule compatibility when personal needs arise. Is responsible for the training and orientation of phlebotomists.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
