Senior Backend Engineer - Content Experiences

Zalando eCommerce Platform (ZCP) is a growing multi-disciplinary group of 500+ data scientists, engineers, business developers, and product managers across Helsinki, Zurich, Dublin and Berlin working to inspire each individual customer with meaningful fashion moments beyond transactions in a very personalized way.. The team directly impacts on what our 50+ million active customers see during their visit at our Fashion Store (e.g.: www.zalando.fi). The team aim is to provide the most relevant, engaging user experience for each customer. We do this by combining Machine Learning driven personalization and business driven systems driving content selection decisions.
 

To further strengthen our efforts to improve our platform offering, we are looking for an experienced Software Engineer striving on the ideas of finely crafted software, operational excellence and building a world class platform.

As a Senior Backend Engineer in this team you will be working on high quality key services. You will drive discovery, design and development for our new initiatives and collaborate with our stakeholders and downstreams.
 

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

• Full development cycle: Discovery, design, develop, deploy, operate, monitor and improve important software solutions that impact millions of customers

• Get onboard our tech stack of Scala, DynamoDB, Redis, PostgreSQL and Kubernetes.

• Specifying, planning, developing, maintaining and operating microservices using REST APIs and cloud-native technologies

• Participate in planning, writing design documents, code reviews and our lean rituals

• Collaborate with many Applied Scientists and Data Engineers across different locations

• Work together with product management to clarify contribution to company initiatives

• Together with your peers, represent the team when reacting to incoming requests, mail and chat communications 

• Consistently ship working, testable, maintainable, readable code/data to production in small and safe iterations. The solutions are performant, scalable and fulfill the set SLOs of the product

• Making a positive impact on our engineering culture, encouraging knowledge sharing and driving technical discussions within the team and beyond

• Keep learning and share your knowledge of state-of-the-art technologies that will help us innovate faster

WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

• You have solid knowledge of JVM based language(s) (Scala, Java, Kotlin), willingness and interest in learning Scala 3 (including libraries like Cats Effect & ZIO)  and knowledge of software patterns and paradigms like continuous integration, test automation and deployment pipelines. 

• You have experience in specifying, planning, developing, maintaining and operating large scale microservices using REST API (OpenAPI), GraphQL, Cloud Platforms (AWS, Kubernetes), PostgreSQL. 

• High level knowledge or interest in data engineering and familiarity with DAGs, data pipelines, S3, Superset, Databricks, or Airflow is a plus. 

• Good skills in SQL and Python is a plus

• You have good communication and collaboration skills and enjoy working in an international and diverse environment with a positive no-job-is-beneath you attitude as a team player

• You are self-motivated and have a proactive mindset with a passion for continuous improvement.

• You have problem-solving skills and ability to apply logical and analytical thinking to complex problems
