UTD Subsurface has an internal vacancy for a Senior Operation Geologist in Houston (USA). This role is to support a new forthcoming Exploration Operated project in Alaska – USA, continuation of REPSOL´s drilling operations in Unconventional USA, and possibly an additional operated Exploration project in Mexico B29.

Key Details

  • Position will be based onsite in The Woodlands, TX (USA).

  • Position is eligible for international assignment / expatriate.

  • Position will include relocation for any non-local internal candidates.

  • Requires travel & working time at rig site.

  • Requires willingness to work extended or non‑standard hours during critical operational phases.

  • Will occasionally be required to provide on‑call or real‑time operational support.

Summary

The Senior Operations Geologist shall be involved in both planning, execution and close out phases of exploration & appraisal wells in North America (operated by REPSOL and non-operated).
The Senior Operations Geologist will be engaged in the Data Acquisition management and mitigation of geologically driven risks that are associated with drilling well operations.

Key Responsibilities
 

Senior Operations Geologist shall be involved in both planning, execution and close out phases of exploration & appraisal wells.

The Sr. Operations Geologist is expected to perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:

General

  • Advisory support and geological guidance to Wells during both planning and execution phases (Primary Geoscience interface).
  • Act as the primary geological interface between Exploration, Appraisal, Wells and Subsurface teams, ensuring continuity from prospect definition to well execution (concerning Data Acquisition).

Well Planning & Data Acquisition Definition

  • Lead the geological Operations planning of exploration and appraisal wells from Kick Off Meeting (as per REPSOL´s procedures) through spud approval.
  • Define geological casing points and Data Acquisition Program (Mudlogging, Wireline logging, Logging While Drilling and Coring, among others) ensuring alignment with well objectives, data acquisition needs and risk mitigation.
  • Review offset well data (stratigraphy, pore pressure, temperature, fluid systems, hazards) to set up Preliminary Subsurface Information and Pre Drilling Data Package among others wells documents for approval and compliance.
  • Prepare Scope of Works & technical evaluation matrixes for Data Acquisition tenders. Prepare budgets & cost estimations (Class V to Class I) for Data Acquisition tenders.
  • Participate actively in all the different stages of the WCP procedure, being responsible of the preparation/update of the PSI/PDDP/Data Acquisition programs.
  • Develop Data Acquisition decision trees proposal and other operations improvements inputs.
  • Produce final Well Report and Composite well logs or other charts.
  • Build and maintain an appropriate geological database updating interpretations from evaluation of well log data, cores and other new well.
  • Capture and communicate lessons learned and improvement opportunities to enhance future well planning and execution.
  • Contribute to peer reviews, technical assurance processes and internal knowledge sharing across exploration and operations teams.

Execution Phase

  • Supervision and control of geological well site activities. Ensure adherence to planning documents and drilling program
