Associate Specialist, BPRD US Manufacturing Operations – Upstream Pilot Plant 

  

Job Description: 

We are seeking a motivated scientist/engineer to join US Manufacturing Operations department within Biologics Process Research and Development (BPR&D).   The successful candidate will be charged with operations supporting upstream pilot-plant activities and introducing innovative process technologies. The candidate may have the opportunity to identify operational improvements to increase efficiency, respond to non-standard requests, or implement new technology and update laboratory procedure documents to standardize the improvement. Candidate is expected to work in a team atmosphere in close collaboration with bioprocess development scientists, facility engineering, lab automation and safety groups. 

The ideal candidate should have strong science/engineering fundamentals, demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, be able to work successfully both independently and in dynamic team environments, and communicate effectively both written and orally. Prior experience from academic or industrial settings with bioprocessing unit operations, including solution preparation, cell culture and/or microbial fermentation, centrifugation, and filtration is a plus.  Candidate may be requested to work during non-business hours/days to support extended growth and production activities. 

Candidate will participate in a range of activities including, but not limited to:  

  • Inoculum expansion and scale-up for mammalian and non-mammalian systems

  • Set-up, operation, and maintenance of pilot-scale single-use bioreactors and fermenters for fed-batch and perfusion processes

  • Set-up, operation, and maintenance of filtration systems for harvest and perfusion processes

  • Set-up, operation, and cleaning of pilot-scale centrifugation and homogenization skids

  • Evaluation and implementation of novel technologies and process analytical tools to improve pilot plant’s reliability and increase efficiencies.

  • Projects/initiatives progressing safety, knowledge management, business intelligence, and digital tool adoption.  

  • Actively working in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment

  • Demonstrate, at all times, safe work habits and maintain a safe work environment. Comprehend and comply with all safety and company policies and procedures.

Education: 

  • BS in Chemical/Biochemical/Biomedical Engineering/Biology/Chemistry or related (with expected graduation no later than May 2025).

Qualifications: 

  • Strong skills in laboratory experimentation and documentation.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and execute standardized laboratory operating procedures.

  • Ability to communicate and work in partnership with other employees in laboratory and pilot-scale operations environments.

  • Demonstrated skills in problem-solving and troubleshooting.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Preferred: 

  • Experience in pharmaceutical or bioprocess industry.

  • Experience in aseptic technique, mammalian or non-mammalian cell culture, or with bioprocess production equipment.

  • Knowledge in any of the following topics: bioreactor design, oxygen mass transfer, process ops, process development, process control, automation, control loop tuning, programming, other biopharmaceutical or bioprocessing topics.

Working conditions:

  • This position may have varying hours based on the needs of the business.

  • Flexibility working some overtime (including weekends) is a requirement in biologics operations.
