Summary of Job Duties:

An Associate General Counsel provides legal services to the Board of Trustees, the President, and administrators at the campuses and units of the University of Arkansas System. An Associate General Counsel provides advice concerning compliance with federal and state statutes and regulations affecting institutions of higher education. The Associate General Counsel evaluates and protects the University’s legal interests and reduces its legal risks. All University contracts relating to employment, purchasing, real estate, patents and technology marketing, sponsored research, and other activities are subject to General Counsel review. The Associate General Counsel may be asked to provide representation in litigation, agency investigations, and administrative proceedings.

The attorney employed in this position will primarily provide day-to-day advice to campuses on employment laws, privacy laws, constitutional requirements, contract issues, and other matters.

The position is located at the Cammack Campus in Little Rock, which is the UA System’s central office.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited American Bar Association law school
• License to practice law in the State of Arkansas (or ability to obtain such a license expeditiously)
• At least ten years of experience (subject to waiver for exceptionally relevant experience) in the practice of law with a governmental, corporate or nonprofit entity or in private practice
• Ability to work collaboratively, and to communicate effectively, with multiple and diverse constituencies, such as administrators, faculty, staff, students, legislators, and community leaders
• Exceptional analytical, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills, as well as sound judgment and personal and professional integrity

Preferred Qualifications·

• Ability to provide advice and counsel in other general matters involving higher education, including issues involving governmental compliance
• Familiarity with the University of Arkansas System or comparable higher education institution
• Proven success in providing legal guidance in the context of complex organizations
