We are a Pre-K through 12th grade school located in the historical 18th and Vine District. We are part of a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory charter schools with a track record of preparing students in educationally underserved communities for success in life. KIPP KC opened its first school, KIPP Endeavor Academy, in 2007 with approximately 31 fifth grade students. Today, KIPP Kansas City has grown to serve students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade and is currently educating approximately 1,000 students.

Job Description

Position Overview

The Assistant Principal reports to the Principal.  In support of the mission of KIPP Kansas City, the Assistant Principal is responsible for leading and building capacity of all teachers and mid-level leaders to implement and continuously develop exceptional instruction, a strong focus on results and continuous improvement, and a culture of consistent and high expectations.  

 

The Assistant Principal works from the belief that excellent schools develop and sustain the capacity for teachers to lead and take ownership of their classroom, grade level, and school’s success.  The Assistant Principal manages and leads teachers and teacher leaders to be their most effective in empowering students to achieve at high levels and grow in personal character.  The ideal candidate possesses instructional and coaching experience with a proven track record of achieving outstanding academic results.

 

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Model and support implementation of the school’s vision and goals

  • Support the development of the Principal’s school-wide vision and take an active role in investing and mobilizing teachers to achieve the collective goals of the school 
  • Own the implementation of select school priorities in support of the school-wide vision 
  • With guidance from the Principal, lead the planning and goal setting for the grades/departments that s/he coaches and ensure alignment with school-wide vision and goals 
  • Monitor progress towards goals utilizing campus and regional enabling systems

Build own and direct reports’ instructional knowledge of standards, content and instructional methods. 

  • Content (Standards, Curriculum, and Assessment):
    1. Develop deep mastery of the academic standards in the subjects/grades for which s/he coaches, and strong understanding of academic standards for all subjects/grades.  Understand the implications of standards on what a student should know and be able to do and connect teachers with relevant resources to improve their content knowledge
    2. Drive partnership with student support team to ensure that all students, including those with exceptionalities, have the access and support needed to achieve mastery
    3. Support the coordination and implementation of school-wide assessments 
    4. Support and monitor strong Data Driven Instructional practices and structures to progress monitor achievement towards campus and regional goals
    5. Teach teachers how to assess for both student mastery and growth towards college readiness and insist that assessments are used to inform teacher instruction
    6. Study curriculum and assessment content and further develop understanding of how assessments map to content mastery, and what is required of students and teachers to accomplish mastery on assessments
    7. Develop own and teacher’s knowledge of best practices in instructional methods and teach teachers how to match particular strategies to students’ needs
  • Develop teachers to provide rigorous and high-quality instruction and support Principal in planning for and implementing enabling systems
    1. Data Analysis (Data-driven Instruction and Progress Monitoring):
      1. Lead Data Driven Instruction: Help teachers determine how data aligns to end-of-year goals (what is being assessed and how it maps to standards); break-out data to analyze how different student groups are performing; determine what data is saying about areas of student mastery and growth; and identify specific instructional actions and adjustments to meet students’ needs
      2. Take ownership of the academic outcomes in classrooms assigned to coach/man
