JOB SUMMARY:

Under general/routine supervision, the Assistant Director/Athletic Communications assists in the development and execution of the communications strategy to maximize publicity for the Niagara University Department of Athletics. The Assistant Director/Athletic Communications produces website content, social media content, distributes media releases, collect and disseminate of information, serves as the primary communication contacts for selected sports, compiles records and statistics, and completes the necessary reports for the NCAA and at the conference level.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform communication duties, which include but not limited to, write press releases, update website, social media, and compile statistics for assigned sports
  • Facilitate relationship with local and national media to increase exposure
  • Write and develop feature/human interest stories on student-athletes and coaches
  • Perform traditional SID duties as necessary
  • Assist in managing home athletic events
  • Travel with athletic team(s) as necessary
  • Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.), both during and after their employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material, should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
  • Supervise the student assistants program
  • Oversee nominations of student-athletes and coaches for awards
  • Perform other duties as assigned

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

% of Time

40% Assist in the supervision of the day-to-day operations of the communications office, including supervising student assistants

20% Create content for the athletics web site and social media channels

15% Coordinate publicity for department with regional and local media

15% Assist with game day event management and operations

5% Compile and file reports, records and statistics with the NCAA, MAAC, AHA offices;

5% Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Ability to work non-traditional business hours.
  2. Ability to travel for extended periods when necessary.
  3. Ability to supervise part-time and student employees.
  4. Sufficient manual dexterity to handle various office machines including but not limited to: computer keyboard, computer software applications, calculator, copy machine and fax.
  5. Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others by telephone.
  6. Strong writing skills along with knowledge of layout and design.
  7. Knowledge of marketing, operations, and equipment management techniques.
  8. Knowledge of computer software applications, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite
  9. Knowledge and interest in sports.
  10. Ability to carry 20 pounds of equipment and supplies to game sites.
  11. Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business on a regular basis.

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS:

The functions of the position usually performed sitting, but may require some amount of time standing. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. Tasks involving working on a computer keyboard
