Position Overview
The Assistant Controller provides administrative and fiscal leadership for the College’s fiscal affairs and operations team. The Assistant Controller will assist the AVP of Accounting & Controller with oversight of accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial report and regulatory compliance, as assigned. To excel in this role, you must possess a strong understanding of accounting principles and the ability to incorporate your functional knowledge of accounting with accounting systems and technology. As an organized professional with keen attention to detail, you should be dependable and capable of working independently and collaboratively.
Responsibilities:
Support most aspects of accounting management (billing, tax forms, reporting etc.)
Provide support to the AVP of Accounting & Controller on accounting, tax and compliance guidelines.
Assist in the formulation of internal controls and policies to comply with legislation and established best practices.
Assist and support in the preparation of financial statements in compliance with official guidelines and requirements
Manage, prepare and approve journal entries, invoices etc. and reconcile accounts for the monthly or annual closing
Participate in preparation for the annual audit and financial statements
Help in development of reports for management or regulatory bodies
Review the company’s accounting information to identify and resolve inaccuracies or imbalances
Utilize accounting IT system to facilitate processes and maintain records
Work with the accounting team in the implementation and continuous improvement of a new ERP system
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Accounting, required.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA), preferred
Previous experience as an assistant controller or other similar management position
Prior experience with setting up a new ERP system and data querying tools
Previous supervisory experience with direct reports
Solid knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and regulations
Experience in non-profit or governmental accounting. Experience in Higher Education preferred.
Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes (budgeting, financial disclosure, reporting etc.)
Understand and possess strong data analysis skills.
Working knowledge of MS Office (especially excel) and enterprise accounting systems
Experience with accounting systems implementations a definite plus
Well-organized with ability to prioritize
Very good communication and interpersonal skills
Attention to detail and problem-solving ability
