Our Finance team plays a crucial role in safeguarding the financial accuracy and stability needed to support Shippo’s mission, ensuring our teams can operate confidently and make well-informed decisions that help merchants succeed.
How we’ll deliver success:Shippo’s Finance team is seeking a Senior Manager/Director, Assistant Controller to lead and scale core operational accounting processes across payroll, equity administration, benefits, accounts payable, reimbursements, operating expenses, and tax.
The Assistant Controller is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, leading the operational accounting team, and implementing reliable processes that support Shippo’s growth. The scope of this role includes ownership of key month-end close workflows, driving consistency across accounting operations, managing critical financial systems such as Ramp and Netsuite, and partnering cross-functionally with People Ops, Strategic Finance, Legal, and external auditors and advisors.
Success will be measured through close accuracy and timeliness, operational efficiency, clarity of process ownership, quality of documentation, control strength, and overall team development.
Success criteria:- This candidate will own the close calendar, with an eye to accelerating the month-end close process and increasing accuracy of the results.- As we migrate our key hire-to-pay and procure-to-pay systems, this candidate will drive efficiency with these new tools by revising our AP, payroll, equity, and Opex processes with the specific DRIs on the accounting team (currently a team of 6).-The ideal candidate will drive: - Faster audit completion (for both group consolidated and local statutory audits) - Increased efficiency through process automation and workflow redesign - High team engagement, clear ownership, and reduced operational friction

Shipping & Handling Responsibilities:
- Lead operational accounting functions including payroll accounting, benefits, 401(k) accounting and administration, equity administration, accounts payable, expense reimbursements, and operating expense accounting
- Own the month-end close for assigned areas, ensuring accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant reporting
- Develop and maintain accounting policies, documentation, reconciliations, and review procedures across operational areas, with a focus on ensuring timely high-risk account reconciliations
- Coordinate with external tax advisors to support corporate tax compliance and audit inquiries
- Identify and implement process improvements, automation opportunities, and system enhancements to strengthen accounting workflows
- Lead and mentor a high-performing operational accounting team, creating clarity around ownership, expectations, and development paths
- Collaborate cross-functionally with FP&A, Legal, and department leaders to ensure aligned budgeting, spend visibility, and operational accuracy
Your Shipping Requirements:
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience with increasing leadership responsibilities
- Strong experience across operational accounting areas (e.g., payroll, benefits, equity, AP and operating expenses, and tax)
- Deep understanding of U.S. GAAP and operational accounting best practices, CPA strongly preferred
- Experience using Ramp for AP, expense management, and corporate card administration. Experience using Ramp for procurement management a plus
- Experience with Netsuite or comparable ERP systems
- Demonstrated ability to build scalable accounting processes in a high-growth environment
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to partner effectively across teams
- Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop accounting professionals at multiple levels
- Experience in SaaS, fintech, or marketplace businesses
