Apprentice Operating Engineer

Position Overview: 

  • It is anticipated that through the implementation of an Apprenticeship program that the parties will create a pool of skilled, entry-level workers with experience and familiarity with the sites Powerhouse systems who meet the minimum qualifications required for the Operating Engineer position.

  • The Apprenticeship Program requires strict professional standards, skill development and professional behavior of all Apprentices, and, as represented by the Union, meets all New Jersey Department of Labor required Standards.

  • Under the supervision of the Watch Engineer/ Shift Supervisor/Operating Engineer observes and operates steam boilers and their auxiliaries. Must have a thorough knowledge of boilers, piping, and auxiliaries and have a practical knowledge of the control instruments. The position will require the testing, treatment and adjustments to the heater and boilers for proper chemistry.

  • Works from verbal and written instructions, governed by special operating procedures received from the Watch Engineer. Exchanges operating information from previous shift and relays it on to relieving shift. Works under the supervision of Watch Engineer/Operating Engineer who has the responsibility of spot checking this position during each shift.

  • Take readings eight times per shift on boilers and Equipment

  • Blow down gauge glass and water column at the start of each shift.

  • Check and lubricate all equipment under the O.E.  jurisdiction.

  • Clean area equipment and area each shift and remove any accumulated debris.

  • Perform required water tests on scheduled shift.

  • Gather up oily rags in proper waste containers and prepare for pickup.

  • Check required operating inventories and notify Watch Engineer of low levels.

Shift/Schedule:

  • Successful candidate must be able and willing to work a rotating shift schedule

  • 8 hour Rotating Shift Work 6AM-2PM, 2PM-10PM, 10PM-6AM

Position Qualifications:

  • Apprentices must pass NJ State high Pressure Black Seal License Test within the 1st year of employment (Company Sponsored)

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • High School Diploma /GED

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Ability, fitness, and skill.
