Anatomic Pathology Division Quality/Education Supervisor – AP Core Lab – Days

The Anatomic Pathology Division Quality/Education Supervisor serves as a technical specialist to develop and, administer procedures, policies and principles pertinent to the area of technical specialty.

The Anat Path Div Qual/Ed Supervisor serves as a clinical educator to students and staff and mentor to less experienced staff in regards to the policies and procedures with Anatomic Pathology and serves in a leadership role within the department units.

The Anat Path Div Qual/Ed Supervisor develops, administers and supervises a complete Quality Compliance CAP Inspection Program for the Laboratory with responsibilities that include, but are not limited to, oversight of process control, systems monitoring, mandates and checklists. This position provides oversight of the Quality Program, including assessments, inspections and audits. The role has oversight of change control processes, including control of SOPs; provides oversight of quality management program within Anatomic Pathology and all QC activities, training and compliance.

Essential Job Statements

Performs and documents quality control records following established SOPs by applying quality control guidelines appropriately for each section and initiating corrective actions when results do not fall within acceptable limits.

Reviews CAP checklist for Anatomic Pathology to include cytopathology, histology, surgical pathology, immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence, autopsy and electron microscopy sections and works with each section to provide answers and documentation to be in compliance for both the biennial self-inspections and biennial on-site inspections.

Oversees daily documentation and preventive instrument maintenance according to established SOPs for Anatomic Pathology instrumentation understanding principles of operation for each, monitors/evaluates temperature-dependent equipment and documents any problems, recognizes instrument malfunction and initiates service calls as appropriate, and independently troubleshoots instrument, assay and/or analytical problems to prevent delays in patient results.

Communicates all problems, instrument malfunctions, etc. to area supervisor, manager and other co-workers if necessary.

Concertedly with the manager, oversees the training/teaching of new employees, students and residents in procedures, policies and principles pertinent to the area of technical specialty.

Ensures all division team members complete all VCU Health System and Department of Pathology essential education, CAP assigned surveys and safety training and provides appropriate documentation to Laboratory Manager once every 12 months.

Oversight of change control processes, including control of SOPs; oversight of quality management and reporting of deviations to Anatomic Pathology QM activities, training, validation of processes and procedures.

Meets regularly with the Director and Manager of Anatomic Pathology, participates in Supervisor/Senior Staff Meetings, independently researches and outlines new SOPs, as needed and supports maintenance of procedure manuals.

Develops new teaching and instruction resource aids, maintains and develops training checklists utilized for documenting training, gives advice for problem solving, encourages and monitors staff to follow SOPs and provides remedial training as indicated.

Completes a minimum of 8 continuing education (CE) credits per year including any mandated training required by their certifying professional organization, the Department, or VCUHS as well as successful completion of annual departmental competency testing.

Patient Population: Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures. Neonates (0-4 weeks), Infant (1-12 months), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Adults (18-64 years), Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Employment Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Life, Health, or Biological Science from an accredited program.

Preferred Education: Master’s Degree in Cytotechnology, Health Science, or Clinical Lab Science.
