The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As an AI / Machine Learning Engineer, you will develop technologies in the areas of machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence, and/or computer vision that create new opportunities for 3M and will develop digital products and solutions capitalizing on 3M’s unique materials, advanced technologies, and global reach. At 3M, we analyze data, create algorithms, and develop real-world solutions for many businesses and markets, consumer and industrial products, worker safety, transportation, semiconductor, electronics, and many more.

• Leveraging expertise to develop and lead new data analytics technologies for product development or manufacturing systems, providing new growth opportunities in addition to supporting existing 3M products and businesses
• Working with global teams to implement impactful solutions in 3M’s diverse markets
• Initiate and contribute to the analysis and development of intellectual property, publish internally and externally, and present at appropriate conferences
• Collaborating with cross-functional research teams in corporate research and in business labs to build capabilities and applications to solve emerging challenges
• Analyzing data, develop algorithms, and deploy solutions based on real-world data

• Understand, develop, and guide the establishment of new computational tools and systems.

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

• Master’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) in a science or engineering discipline
• Five (5) years experience in Data Science or Data Analytics in a private, public, government or military environment
• Three (3) years experience developing new technology and/or products in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

• Ph.D. degree or post-doctoral fellowship in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Cognitive Science, Software Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline from an accredited university
• Three (3) years technical leadership of a development team
• Training and/or experience in deep learning, machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence, statistics, informatics, VAEs, transformers, diffusion models, optimization algorithms and/or applied mathematics through thesis work, or industry or national lab employment
• Fluent in one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, MATLAB, C, C++, Java, and/or R)
• Experienced with Azure and AWS cloud services and data analytics tools
• Ability to deal with the ambiguity of early-stage scouting and evaluation of new opportunities and the flexibility to change direction as additional information becomes available
• Physics or chemistry related domain knowledge informed machine learning and/or scientific machine learning experience
• Demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by publications and presentations

Work location:

• Hybrid Eligible (Job Duties allow for some remote work but require travel to 3M Center at least 3 days per week)
