Purpose
Provide organized and reliable editorial support services for two book acquisitions editors in a scholarly publishing organization.
Responsibilities
Assist acquiring editors in all phases of manuscript acquisition from initial assessment and review to final preparation of manuscripts and art for transmittal to copyediting. Work includes preparing contracts, handling rejected projects, and corresponding with authors.
Coordinate the peer review of manuscripts. Correspond with authors and manuscript reviewers to ensure timely and productive review. Evaluate departmental work flow, and establish new procedures to streamline processes as necessary. Track manuscript due dates and communicate with editors and authors about deadlines.
Perform clerical support functions for editorial office which will include entering data, copying, maintaining filing systems, distributing materials for editorial and faculty board meetings, and overseeing awards submissions. Coordinate and supervise work of student employees.
Process documents to ensure payment of manuscript reviewers.
Take notes and distribute timely minutes from various meetings.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or one year of relevant experience in book publishing with a commercial or university publisher.
Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite and database software.
Strong skills in time and deadline management.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with internal staff and external clients.
Attention to detail and ability to follow through on tasks to successful completion.
Must be able to travel to conferences and university campuses, if needed.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in book, journal, or magazine publishing.
Salary Range
$43,000
