About the role

Job Description Summary

The Director of AI in Education and Scholarship serves as a strategic leader within the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) team, operationalizing MUSC's AI academic strategic plan. This role focuses specifically on the purposeful integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare education to create an AI-competent workforce prepared to thrive in a digital world, while bolstering our capacity to explore the intersection of AI and education through leading scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) initiatives.

Reporting to Executive Director of CATL, with cross-functional collaboration with the Enterprise Chief AI Officer, this position will lead the AI in education research grant program and co-design and manage AI in education initiatives encompassing both tool adoption and pedagogical integration. The Director will lead communications related to MUSC's AI-in-education and scholarship initiatives both locally and nationally and build a culture of curiosity and play around AI integration and scholarship.

Building upon MUSC's established AI Acceptable Use Framework and supporting the adoption of the Digital Education Council (DEC) AI literacy framework, this position will be responsible for partnering with various entities across the university, including the Education Innovation Advocates Faculty to implement an AI adoption plan and mechanisms for sharing and creating a database of use cases. The position will collaboratively lead the creation of an AI integrated curriculum for faculty and students as well as create a clear pathway for faculty to research AI-driven innovations in education.

The Director will foster interdisciplinary collaboration across academic colleges and Academic Affairs Faculty to identify and scale promising use cases, create a comprehensive AI tool inventory, and align projects with MUSC's strategic goals. Key collaborative partnerships include the Office of Interprofessional Education with our Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), Office of Innovation, Clemson-MUSC AI Hub, Center for Academic Excellence and Writing Center, Office of Student Engagement, and the University Library.

Strategic Leadership & Planning 30%
Focuses on vision-setting, institutional alignment, and long-term strategy.

  • Lead the implementation of MUSC's AI Acceptable Use Framework and support adoption of the DEC AI literacy framework
  • Develop and execute strategic plans for AI integration across academic colleges and units
  • Create and implement a university-wide AI adoption plan with mechanisms for sharing and documenting use cases

  • Establish metrics and reporting mechanisms for AI in education initiatives aligned with institutional strategic goals

Curriculum Innovation & Faculty Support 30%

Centers on transforming teaching and learning through AI-enhanced practices.

  • Assist faculty and staff with integrating AI-enabled and enhanced technology into their teaching
  • Lead the creation of an AI-integrated curriculum for faculty and students
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, instructional designers, and learners to develop high-impact, immersive AI-enhanced practices
  • Support the integration of AI-enhanced educational technologies (e.g., Microsoft 365, Feedback Fruits, D2L Brightspace, Boodlebox etc.) into course curriculum
  • Partner with the SoTL learning community to position MUSC as a leader in AI-augmented teaching and learning
  • Collaborate with the Education Innovation Advocates Faculty to implement AI adoption strategies and share best practices

Research, Evaluation & Continuous Improvement 15%

Emphasizes evidence-based practice, assessment, and innovation scaling.
