Job Description

This position is in support of the Influx Care Facility located in Carrizo Springs, TX.  The purpose of the facility is to provide comprehensive care for migrant youths ages 13 to 17 in the Care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) who are awaiting reunification or repatriation.  This care will begin as soon as the youths arrive at the facility and last until their arranged departure with family or sponsors. The comprehensive care includes but is not limited to initial screening and exams, identifications of prior conditions and allergies, day to day care of routine, urgent and emergency medical conditions.  

The emergency room nurse will provide urgent and compassionate care to immigrant children, addressing their medical needs while being sensitive to the cultural and emotional challenges they face. This role involves triaging patients, performing assessments, administering treatments, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the best outcomes for this vulnerable population.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough assessments and triage of immigrant children presenting with various medical conditions. 
• Provide immediate and appropriate nursing care while ensuring a culturally sensitive approach to treatment. 
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, monitoring for effectiveness and adverse reactions. 
• Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans. 
• Educate patients and their families about health conditions, treatment options, and follow-up care in an understandable manner. 
• Document all patient care activities accurately and promptly in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards. 
• Organize and participate in emergency response efforts, ensuring a safe environment for children and their families. 
• Advocate for the needs and rights of immigrant children within the healthcare system, providing information about available resources and support services. 
• Assist medical providers with medical procedures and treatments as allowed within licensed scope of work.  
• Assessment and documentation of the patient’s vital signs, chief complaint, medical history, prescribed medications.  
• Establish observable and documentable patient goals using care plans within NANDA.   
• Proactively and independently administer basic and urgent/emergent care, including but not limited to inserting catheters with blood specimen collection, urine collection and EKG’s, visual acuity, basic wound care, changing bandages or administering intravenous medications.  
• Provides support and education to help patients make responsible health decisions. 
• Maintains supply inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies.  
• Restocking clinical and provider areas once supplies are received.  
• Is accountable for maintaining and improving own physician knowledge and skill competence.  
• Provides patient care that promotes the safety and well-being of all patients in the clinic.   
• Supports the International SOS philosophy, objectives and goals and Organization mission and vision.  
• Respects and supports patient rights.
