Position Summary:
The Assistant Director of Career Management will play a key role in driving the career management function serving students in graduate technical programs. The incumbent will be responsible for assessing the student population needs, planning and executing innovative programs to meet these needs. Key aspects of the role include coaching students, creation and execution of career development programs and events, engagement with potential employers and industry experts on behalf of the students. This position reports to the Senior Director of Career Management.
This position will be a full-time appointment based at the Cornell Tech campus in New York City.
Successful candidates will need to have and display the following competencies as part of this role:
Effective Communication, particularly having the ability to communicate to a wide range of constituents (both internal and external), as well as being able to adjust both the form and style of communication to fit the audience and its message.
Decision Quality, being able to consider all relevant factors and use appropriate principles to make sound decisions, even in the absence of complete information.
Planning and prioritizing work to meet commitments aligned with departmental and organizational goals.
Building strong networks and relationships inside and outside the organization
Required Qualifications:
Position Competencies/Skills: Job related knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that contribute to success.
- A BS or BA degree in a STEM field and/or experience recruiting for tech roles is desirable
- 2-4 years of experience in industry and/or academic roles
- Experience in successful recruiting or advising graduate students; understanding of the job markets for technical degree holders
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and coordinate ongoing activities in parallel.
- Comfortable working with both high levels of autonomously and as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate and influence with tact and diplomacy to a wide range of internal and external constituents.
- Willingness to continuously examine processes and seek improvements.
Position Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Student Advising: 50 %
- Advise faculty and program leadership on trends, opportunities and challenges related technical program students
- Serve as primary career advisor for 400+ graduate students in technical programs.
- Work with students pursing careers across a range of functions including software development, data analytics, data science, product management and engineering.
