Jump start your nursing career at IU Health!! The Patient Care Internship (PCI) program at Ball Memorial Hospital is for senior nursing students graduating December 2026 and May 2027 (preferred).

The Patient Care Intern (PCI) works under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN) as a non-licensed team member. As a non-licensed team member, the PCI provides care to designated patients and supports the patient care team. Job duties include observation of the Registered Nurse, provision of activities of daily living, mobility assistance, continuous observation including suicide prevention, and ensuring the patient's surroundings are clean and orderly.  

 

In the Patient Care Internship (PCI) Program you can expect the following:  

 

  • The full-time summer intensive program from May 18th, 2025 through July 26th, 2026, consisting of mentoring/observation experience with a consistent RN and weekly connection meetings with themed content for each of those sessions including but not limited to harm prevention, common diagnoses and patient populations and nursing implications, as well as professional development.  

  • After the summer intensive, the PCI will stay on their unit in a supplemental (PRN) status and will do one mentored shift with their RN advisor per scheduling period.    

    • The supplemental work requirement after the summer intensive is a minimum of 24 hours in every 6-week scheduling period, or two 12 hour shifts every 6 weeks 

    • Attendance is necessary to success in this role.

  • Qualifications    

     

    • Requires PCI be actively enrolled as a senior level student in an accredited nursing education program that is accredited by a national organization (official transcripts requested). 

      For example, the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
