The Guardian is now looking for a news editor and writer to join its west coast news desk.

Typical schedule: Friday - Tuesday or equivalent schedule two weeks out of six, Monday - Friday four weeks out of six.
About the role
The west coast team covers US news for a global audience, focusing on the Guardian’s editorial priorities of power and equity in America. The team aims to expertly cover urgent news while producing impactful features, enterprise coverage and investigate reporting.
The news editor and writer will hold a key role in the team, serving as west coast weekend editor for two weekends out of six, and working as an editor and writer on the west coast news desk four weeks out of six.
As weekend editor, this staffer will oversee US news during west coast hours; liaising with colleagues in London, Australia and New York to cover breaking and daily news; writing, commissioning and editing news stories; deploying staff reporters and freelancers, and monitoring the home page and social channels.
On weekdays, the staffer will help set the news agenda by assigning and editing news stories and explainers, write news stories and explainers, as well as live blog.
We’re looking for someone who is passionate about delivering the news and producing distinctive journalism that moves the needle. You should be well-versed in the Guardian’s major beats including climate, politics and tech. You should be comfortable working independently and taking charge, have significant experience in digital journalism and news editing.
About you
- Excellent knowledge of national news and current affairs
- Excellent knowledge of west coast news and current affairs
- Expert news judgement
- Experience with daily news assigning and editing, including breaking news
- Extensive experience writing and reporting news stories, including on key topics including politics and tech
- Significant digital journalism experience, including by running liveblogs
- Attention to detail
- Self starter mentality
- Understanding of Guardian tone, global audience and overall ‘playful intelligence’ approach

Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $110,000 - 115,000
