Job Duties

Consider joining the Virginia Department of Health as we foster healthy and resilient communities. The Health Educator serves the Mt. Rogers Health District.

This position oversees the coordination and clinical alignment of the Comprehensive Harm Reduction (CHR) program and services within the Mount Rogers Health District, with a strong emphasis on health education, prevention, and disease transmission reduction strategies. This position will ensure appropriate delivery of services such as HIV/HCV/STI rapid testing, PrEP counseling, hepatitis and vaccination referrals, and the provision of safer use supplies and education. This role includes day-to-day oversight and mentoring of a peer harm reduction specialist.

Characteristic activities: establish goals and objectives for assigned programs; prepares and submits grant applications; delivers educational programs to clients; conducts health education training; revises and develops educational materials; collects program-specific data and writes reports; conducts needs assessments; provides technical assistance to local and community agencies/organizations regarding program planning.



*This is a restricted position, which is funded by non cooperative general funds for a 1 year period ending 6/30/2026. The availability of funding is scheduled for review (enter annually and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.*

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of public health issues; public and private health care practices; program evaluation; planning and policy development; community organizing; survey methods and use of data and health education principles
• Skills in program planning; implementations and evaluation; community assessment and organization; writing reports and program plans; grant writing; public speaking; group dynamics and consultation with other professionals and the general public
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, problem solve, make appropriate decisions and develop program goals and objectives, evaluate program outcomes, impacts and processes
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; utilize excellent interpersonal skills and foster good working relationships with professionals and community groups to achieve desired outcomes
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with information and security policies

Additional Considerations

• Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) for Health Educators.
• Experience working in public health, social work, human services or health-related field preferred
